Are you Listening ~ or Are You Missing Out?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX of Naperville & RE/MAX Enterprises

This past weekend I met a great couple, they are getting married and looking for their first home. They found me from a flyer that I have posted online for one of my listings. (Wait...Did I hear the internet doesn't work?)

We had an instant connection to the point of not needing introductions, I felt as though I had known them for years. In the course of our conversation they reminded me of a very important skill we need to have as real estate practitioners over any other skill.

They spoke of an agent that helped them last year, they said she had a great personality, someone that they could see going out for drinks with, BUT...she was not listening to them. She even went as far as to take them to see the same house twice, even after they told her that they didn't like it the first time.

ListenThe skill of listening to our clients' needs and wants, I believe, is the most important skill that we can have. We can be a book of knowledge, have the best personality, know the market front and back and... be the best marketers, blog every day, generate leads left and right, but if we don't listen to our clients what good is all that?

In the time that I spent with my clients, I learned so much from the things they said during the conversation, because I listened. I now know that they like to entertain so I need to find a home with an open floor plan, I know that they do not want to pay high taxes, I know that they both do a lot of work on the computer (fellow bloggers), so I need to find a home with a den or loft, a basement is a must and they prefer a newer home over an older home.

All and all it's a reminder to listen to what the clients' needs and wants are in other fill the need, listening is the key to a successful Realtor/Client relationship.

Absolutely! We HAVE TO listen to our clients!! Many Agents I run in to these days are trying to steer the client rather than help them in the way they are requesting.

The more we listen the more we learn. Not only for the person we are working with at the time but future clients.

Maria - So true !  Listening is the key skill for any business person to be skilled in.  That and asking questions.  It provides the opportunity to really know what the client is looking for and to establish rapport and trust.  Once someone knows that you are listening to them, it also shows that you care.  Is very powerful and a skill that some people struggle with because they want to do all the talking.
