Screen capture made easy

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Shoreline New Hampshire & Maine

Have you ever looked wishfully at other blogs with those great graphics like a photo by photo version of how to do something or similiar graphics from websites.

Those are called "screen captures" and just as the name says, they're an actual capture or graphic of the computer screen.

There's a very simple, very easy, and FREE way to do that yourself using tools already present on most computers. This is the how to do it version for Windows XP.

Most keyboards have a button that says "Print Screen" which actually does just that.

On a standard QWWERTY keyboard it's usually located just to the right of the F-12 key.  The thing you may not have known is that it prints it to your Windows clipboard.

So to capture a photo of your computer screen or screen capture, you first just hit the "Print Screen" key to save it to the clipboard.

I used Microsoft Paint which comes on most all computer to draw the red circle and insert the text. I then cropped the photo to the part I wanted it illustrate, saved it as a GIF, and then just dropped it into this blog like a regular photograph.

Quick, easy, and FREE.

It matters to us as much as it matters to you.

Great post, I have been using a free download called snipping tool, but the print screen actually works as easy.

Another thing to do is get 'SnagIt' which is great to use.  I do this also with the print scrren, open up Publisher, right click to save as jpg and your done!  Hope that helps somebody too!

This is one of those things that makes you mad you didn't find out about it sooner.

I have Snag-it too Lyn and use it but this is free. I used Paint to make my examples but I'll bet you could do a better job with a better graphics program like Picasa or Photoshop.

I'll bet you can do it with minimum trouble Vickie. Email me if you need help.

Hi Jim ~ Great instructions!  I've been using the print-screen and Paint to work with wordles but haven't done the advanced stuff like drawing circles, etc. Thanks - I've bookmarked this for future reference.

Jim- Thanks so much for the reminder! I totally forgot about that little button! Funny how we get so hung up on the newest and latest software and forget about the simple ways of doing things ;)

Jim - I find it interesting that Print Screen doesn't print (i.e., to your printer) but to your clipboard, which isn't intuitive. I like Scan Snap (not free, but reasonably) for all the variations you can do.

Sean,

FYI

The first point of our ActiveRain Community Guidelines states:

(What part of 'DO NOT' do we NOT understand here?)
