Facebook is Sticking a Fork in Twitter: It’s Done…

By
Real Estate Agent with Eau Claire Realty, Inc.

Facebook today announced a major overhaul of the site. Some of the new features a different way to integrate “pages” and removing the cap on being a fan. They are also adding many new Twitter-like features such as the ability to have one way friendships that is you can befriend someone without them being a friend back. The big news is also that they are streaming the chat in a different way to also be more like Twitter. So yes the talk is that Twitter might need a lifeline in order to stay useful so to speak. Critics would argue that Facebook doesn’t have SMS capabilities but is that in the works as well?

You can find out more here.

You can see what the changes look like here.

So what do you think is Twitter done for?

It looks like a rather major change. I mean probably the biggest in years. It will definitely give Twitter a run but who knows.

Shane,

I love Facebook.  Not only for business, but I have reconnected with people I haven't seen in many years.  It's so easy to share stuff, and a great way to share my business with others as well.  Twitter.  Just not getting the attraction.  Looks like fun, and yeah it's great to blast one message to whoever you can at one time.  But the time to build a decent "following" doesn't seem worth it to me when I have something like Facebook that has the customer demographic and a ton of powerful features.

I don't really care for Twitter. I do have my tweets and blogs feeding over to Facebook, so if I didn't have to tweet to get the same message across, maybe FB is onto something.

Shane, thanks for the udpate.

Thing is, "Friend" is different than "Follower". Facebook messed it up by not calling it something different than a Friend.

Who wants to befriend someone who doesn't want to befriend you?

I love Twitter, and I know many people who have made great connections with others who they wouldn't be able to call or email. Plus, the simplicity of 140 characters keeps things brief. Seems like too much clutter on Facebook for that kind of ongoing conversation, but we'll see!

I also like to keep Facebook somewhat personal, for now.

p.s. Do you know if Facebook is going to come out or allow 3rd party programs like it's Twitter-like counterparts like www.tweetdeck.com or www.tweetgrid.com?

The new Facebook API allows quite a bit its just new and a matter of programming stuff for it. There is a lot of new stuff already though. I guess I am more of a facebook person because I like the face. I can see Twitter being useful but it may get swallowed up here. I didnt link to the stories rumoring it being bought out by Facebook.

I never quite knew how to use twitter to benifit my busines.  I'd like to see some of these social networks consolidate so I don't have to open a bunch of diff. programs

Facebook is trying their hardest to overcome the Twitter explosion. I don't Facebook will ever be a Twitter though, they are completely separate breeds. Facebook is simply a "closed" system and Twitter is "open". Facebook will never be a Twitter simply because of this principal. Twitter's explosion is because of the up-to-date news/alert feel. Facebook can't achieve this being a closed loop system where you have to be "friends" with someone in most cases to see their stream of data. If Facebook changes their whole system, I think they are going to mess up the very thing that makes them successful.

Facebook is doing great new things, but if they get ahead of themselves they will make mistakes. They've already changed the "public pages" into something like profile pages, and the reponse was initially negative by many long time FB users... They just have to be careful...

Facebook wants to be where Twitter is right now. Twitter has an OVERWHELMING characteristc that FB doesn't have, and that is the amount of time people spend using the system. Twitter has been adopted into many people's Social Network with tools such as Tweetdeck, TwitterFox, Friendfeed and many others. This allows users to have a constant daily connection to their account, and allows them on-the-fly updates of their Twitter. This keeps people logged in longer and keeps people using Twitter more.

Facebook doesn't have this, and they want it bad. They would love their users to log in all day long and send updates and connect with their network, but right now FB is not that kind of system. Maybe they'll figure out what they need to do this year to compete, but right now FB doesn't even hold a stick to Twitter.

I think this blog post should be named: Twitter is Sticking a Fork in Facebook: It's Done....

And don't even get me started on Friendfeed, Friendfeed is getting ready to erupt huge. 2009 will bring big things to the technology world, and that's "Data portability" and "Microblogging" as a standard. Blogrolls will turn into Tweetrolls... "Share This" will turn into "Tweet This". "Trackbacks" will turn into "Tweetbacks".

Well facebook almost bought Twitter and still could. But if Facebook adds any more functionality that Twitter offers that could be the end. Many are speculating it. This is only the first of many things planned. Facebook has many many more users than Twitter and thats why its such a big deal.

Friendfeed is owned by Twitter. I am on there. I just dont use it.
