Were They Drunk And Was It A Big Misunderstanding?

By
Real Estate Agent with Oakstone Properties, Homes in Richmond VA

Remember the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, prohibition for drinking, which was later repelled?  It was not the first such attempt.  On March 5th, 1623 the first temperance law passed in the new world was right here in Virginia.  My suspicion is, the House members were plastered, and someone snuck the proposal under the stack of graft payment checks they were signing, and it was all a big misunderstanding.

You know, that scenario is entirely plausible! I just watched the entire "John Adams" miniseries starring Paul Giamatti. It appears to be a factual recreation of the birth of our nation (excellent re-enactment of the Boston Massacre). The "congress" could easily have behaved as you suggest. (If you have time to kill, I recommend this movie!)

I think most peoples understandings of what happened back then are basically just wrong. But thats how history is usually.. just wrong.

Nate, maybe they were all drunk and when they got sober, they couldn't believe their terrible behavior while drunk.... so they made the law to try to regulate themselves... who knew?

Hey Nate, drunken politicians? Now our guys in Washington would never do that! HaHa! That is probably the rule, not the exception!
