It was less than a week ago the funeral for Waikiki legend/ entertainer Do Ho was held.  The family and fans of Don were still morning when the tragic news hit.  His 52-year-old daughter Dayna Ho-Henry was found dead.  According to the news reports she was staying with friends in Waialua on the North Shore of Oahu.

For those of you who remember seeing Don Ho's show live or on TV, his daughter Dayna was one of the dancers in his show.

The spokesman from the Honolulu Police Department said they were not suspecting foul play.

How very sad! We loved watching the Don Ho show when I was very little. I saw the news report that he had passed. How tragic that his daughter is gone as well.

Randy, it was hard for me to think of Hawaii, without thinking of Don Ho, and now another member of his family is also gone.  Even though the police are saying that they do not believe that there was any foul play, it still looks a little suspicious that she would pass away so soon after her father.

Dayna was my friend.  I worked with her in the early 90's and found her to be a caring and loving person, even though she was going through some tough times.  I wish I had gone to Don Ho's funeral now, so that I could have seen her and grieved with her.  I chose to stay away, not wanting to be a hindrance.  What a bad choice that was.  I will miss her.

Lysa - Very sad.  I think everyone who lives or lived in Hawaii is connected in some way.

Teri - She was the best known of his family members also.

George - The timing is quite a coincidence if you believe in them.

Sally - It is truly sad.  We lost a couple of ambassadors to Hawaii.  Their family had had two big losses within a few weeks of each other.

Randy,

I have seen this happen many times.  The stress brought about by losing someone close causes all kinds of problems.

Aloha,

Lucky :(

My father use to date Dana Ho-Henry for many years.  I am completely shocked by her death, as she was to young to go.  I feel so sorry for Mahina and her other daughter.  I have not seen her in many years, but ever since my father told me about this I cannot get it out of my mind.  She brought out the best in my father, although he may not want to admit this, in some weird way she was able to teach my father how to be a better dad, and for that I will always be grateful to her.

I used to dance with the Don Ho Show back in the day.  Way back in 1978 - 1980.  Dayna, Dori & Lei were always there and we all had fun together!  I remember Dayna as a very sensitive, sprirtual & caring beautiful person.  She loved everybody!!  I JUST found out about her death and I'm in shock!!  TOTAL SHOCK!  I'm feeling a huge sadness for her children and her family!  I almost came to Hawaii for Don's funeral but thought I'd leave the family to greive on their own.  I lost my parents 7 yrs ago and I truly know what they are going through.  Now the lost of Dayna is too sudden... I'm crying for her daughters..... this is truly a difficult time of sadness.  God Bless You Dayna!!

I went to Kamehameha School with Dayna, Donlalei, and Dondi.  Dayna was me best friend during the late 60's and early 70's.  I spent many a day and night at the family home in Kaneohe, wher Dayna and I would listen to music , joke, and sneak cigarettes...  kid stuff.  I am shocked and deeply saddened by the news that she has passed, and in such a suddne and regrettable way.  My aloha to the family.

Dear Randy and others who were fortunate enough to know Dayna well,

I only knew Dayna for a semester or two when I first came to Hawaii and taught at Hawaii Loa College.  She was in an evening history class and was an outstanding intellect as well as a splendidly positive and loving person.

She taught me a lot about the true spirit of aloha, and right away I felt privileged to have a chance to get to know her a little.

She always looked lovely, and I had no real awareness of her famous father.  One evening, I complimented her on the beautiful sarong she was wearing.  Imagine my astonishment when she brought the sarong to me the next day and wanted me to have it.  It was very difficult to persuade her that the sarong was beautiful because it complemented her beauty, and that I appreciated her gesture very much, even though I did not feel it would be right to accept such a gift from a student.

She seemed to understand.  I do hope she did not take this as a rejection.

At the end of the semester, I asked students for evaluations and included a question about what had impressed them most about my teaching.  Dayna wrote that she was impressed by the fact that my shoes and handbag always matched!  Such a ha'ole I was!  But I never forgot her and have told these anecdotes about her wherever I've traveled or lived or taught.

If there were any way to be in touch with her family and friends to offer my deep condolences for their loss, I would be grateful for information.  When I retired to Hilo last year, I hoped to someday look up Dayna and see how her life had evolved.  It was a terrible blow to learn of her passing just before we returned.

I still hope to locate a picture of her or a film of her dancing.  I never was able to see her perform.  When I taught at Hawaii Loa, I had a small salary and small child.  Even had I known that she danced in her father's show, I might have been unable to go to one.  She never mentioned her other life--kept a low profile as a regular student.  Is there a video of Don Ho's memorial service or other movie that I might see sometime?

With much aloha,

Nan Sumner-Mack
