Over the last several months I left a couple of semi cryptic posts Timu, the startup company that I left ActiveRain back in the fall to found.  Obviously from the logo I posted people were able to correctly guess what industry it was in, sports.  This inspired some guessing around ActiveRain about how exactly Timu was related to sports and what if anything Timu stood for.

After several months of development work, we finally opened Timu up this week in a private beta test.  Unlike how so many web 2.0 companies slap a beta sticker on a product (cough, Google) and launch it like that this is an actual beta test with a small group of users to work out the kinks before a real launch in the not so distant future.

So what is Timu?

While Timu isn't yet open to the public, we are finally letting the cat out of the bag about what Timu is.  Timu is a communication and social networking platform for sports teams.  Whether it's little league, high school or adult rec. leagues Timu allows teams to take advantage of social networking concepts to help teams to schedule, coordinate, organize and share.

I've played on and still play on several sports teams, and team communication away from the game has always been a problem.  How do you know when practices are, who's going to make it to games, is the game rained out?  These are some of the core problems that Timu will help to solve.

We're initially launching the platform for baseball and softball teams but will be adding in all the other major sports over the next year.

And what does it stand for?

I've seen plenty of guess about with Timu actually stands for, a couple of my favorites have been "Tetherball in my utopia", and "Teams in Motion United".  Sorry to ruin the guessing, but Timu isn't an acronym for anything, but it does have a relevant meaning.  Timu means "Team" in Swahili, plus it was a short, easy to remember and acquirable domain name :)

Looking for some beta testers

While Timu is not yet open to the public, we are still looking for a few additional beta test teams.  If you play on, organize or coach a baseball/softball team and would like to participate and help shape the direction of a really cool application, let us know.

Matt I congrats on Timu.  I wish I could be of help but me an sports have never mixed unfortunately so I wouldn't be a good tester.  Wishing you all the best in your new endeavor.

Okay, okay, I know that isn't exactly a real estate related normal type of featured post, but I was so excited to see this post I couldn't help myself!

I got a walkthrough of the Timu service and I must say that I was totally blown away.  I am 100% positive this new site will be as successful as ActiveRain.  Matt I believe that you nailed it!

If anyone reading this comment does actually play baseball or softball on a rec league you should do whatever you can to get on this beta test! You won't regret it.

Cograts Matt.

Jon, you can save the blatent self promotional featured post for when we actually launch :)

We're also starting a blog at http://blog.timu.com where Caleb and me will be posting updates about Timu, so I can keep my blog here mostly for real estate/market related posts.

Matt, this is news to me.  I'm so out of the loop.  Congrats on what appears to be a great endeavor for you.  I can see this becoming viral, just like Active Rain.  Wooo hooooo!

My kids are competitive cheerleaders for Top Gun, one of the best cheer gyms in the nation.  I can see how they could definitely get into something like this.  We'd be up for beta testing if you open it up to other sports.

Hi Matt - Timu reminds me of the men's team name on Celebrity Apprentice ... KOTU - Kings of the Universe. Good luck with the new site!

So here it is!  Congratulations, Matt!  I think you've got a great product in Timu.  My kids sports team days are behind me, but I can see how this would have been useful and very welcome.  Best wishes on a great launch.

Kevin and I were both athletes in college and, unfortunately, our "best" days are behind us.  I just signed my little girl up for "micro" soccer and we ar sponsoring her team.  You said softball in your post, if you're open to soccer, I'm game... (sorry, couldn't help myself) ... ;)

Bryant: Yes, I'm working with Caleb on this venture too.

KMG Mortgage Group: Soccer is one of the next sports on my list to support.  But I doubt we'll be adding any additional sports until the beta is over in a month or two.  Just keeping the focus small at first.

I'm no help, but my 4 year old plays Ice Hockey...  He'll be playing during the 1st period break at the Thrashers/Flames game on Sunday... doesn't matter for Timu, but I am a proud Dad...

If you can talk about it at this point, briefly, how does Timu compare & contrast with eteamz.com?

Matt,

Congrats my friend. After months of getting screen shots it has been really cool to get to play with the site. I don't know if you saw the stats I filled out for one of the games in our test league (or the player names that I got a kick out of making up) but I have been poking around a little bit.

I hope to have some more time this weekend to play around with it. You don't think I would look like a crazy parent if I signed Kelan up for a tee-ball league at 20 months old so I can really put it through the paces, do you? haha

From what I've seen so far, well done!!!

I was intrigued by the name, so came to check out the post.  I agree with the comment that Timu sounds kind of like the Men's Celebrity Apprentice Team name though Timu stands for something.

Jeff: eteamz basically offers a website solution for sports teams, where Timu is more focused on communications and building a community around everyone involved with a team.  For an example from the real estate industry, it would be like comparing Advanced Access to ActiveRain.  Sure there's some overlap of features but the overall package is very different.

Matt -

That sounds very interesting.  I've used eteamz for several years now with my son's various baseball, basketball and soccer leagues and teams, and even though they include message boards for each team's or league's site, I've rarely seen them being used.  Virtually all the info seems to flow in one direction, from the league to players & parents - schedules, event calendar, scores & standings, etc.

So, if Timu is able to foster interaction, and a sense of community around a team, at even a fraction of the level all of you have been able to achieve with AR, I think you'll have a winner.  Congratulations again, and best of luck to you, and Timu.

Matt, genius. As a mom of three boys who played sports from 5 years old and up this will be tremendous. How can I help promote it in Ann Arbor.

We have a site here called MLive.com  It is owned  by the A2News. After every game they have a thread where folks can read and comment. It is a huge hit but not just for parents or team members.

Lots of opposing teams log on and comment negatively about someone else.

However the point being after the game people want to connect.

I didn't know you and Caleb were working together again. I see Success written all over this and will help in anyway I can.
