Annual Memorial Service for the Heroes of the Alamo

Today is the 137th Anniversary of the fall of the Alamo.  There was a re-enactment of the battle this morning at 6:00 AM.  There are other FREE Events commemorating the Battle throughout the weekend.

I had the honor of attending an "invitation only" event this afternoon.  As a member of The Woman's Club of San Antonio, I was able to attend the Annual Memorial Service for the Heroes of the Alamo this afternoon at 2:30 pm along with other members of our Club.

I've been to the Alamo many times, always with friends or family wanting to visit when they were here.  I always enjoy my visit there and it never fails that I learn something new about the buildings that remain standing or about the battle.  I've always been fascinated by the battle and how 189 men could hold off thousands for 12 days before finally being overtaken by them during a pre-dawn assault.

Today, we entered The Alamo and were ushered to our seats.  I was able to sit and look around at the inside of the building, remembering things I'd learned on previous tours and things I've learned in reading about the battle.  My favorite part of the ceremony was the Roll Call of States and Nations - where the flags of each State of the Union and Country representing the birthplace of each of these men were presented - Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Denmark, England, Germany, Ireland, and Wales.

If you live in the San Antonio, TX area and haven't visited The Alamo or haven't been there recently, this is a great weekend to visit and learn a little Texas and American History.  There are events scheduled all weekend and it's going to be another beautiful Texas weekend, why not take advantage of it.

Judi - The first thing Ceil told me when I came in was to be sure to read Judi's Blog. My my got a front row seat which is well deserved for all the work you do to support The Woman's Club. I'm sure it gives everyone a warm fuzzy feeling everytime they visit the Alamo and remember The Alamo and the history it represents. Keep up the good work my friend.

Tom, Yes, next time you're here, we'll spend an entire day on the Riverwalk and visit The Alamo.  Yesterday's visit was awesome.  Sorry, no pictures -- they don't allow us to take pictures inside of The Alamo.

Hi Judi—Everyone who visits San Antonio should go to the Alamo to honor those who fought so bravely. It's one of the first places I took Bruce to visit when he first arrived in San Antonio and became our personal favorite of historic sites there... plus the missions, especially Mission San Jose where he proposed to me.

I'm glad you were able to attend the Annual Memorial Service for the Heroes of the Alamo... you earned the right to be there!

Vaya con Dios!

Fred,  I would have liked to have been able to attend the reenactment too -- but didn't want to get up early enough to get down there by 7:00 AM.  (Shame on me)  They have it every year -- March 6th -- the Anniversary of the Battle.  You'll have to plan a trip to San Antonio to watch it.  :)

Linda,  Yes, everyone who visits San Antonio should visit the Alamo.  I can only imagine what it was like originally.  We're so lucky the ladies of San Antonio were able to save the Church and what's left of the Long Barrack.

Bruce proposed to you at Mission San Jose?  :)  What a wonderful memory you have.  :)   It was such a privilege to be included in the group that attended the Annual Memorial Service.  I can't wait to tell my Uncles about it the next time I go to Louisiana.  My great-great Grandmother was originally from San Antonio and the city has always been a special place for our family.

Hi Judy—Yes, Bruce proposed at Mission San Jose in June 1997 while he was on vacation. He said he would invite me to Hawaii, but it didn't happen until much later.  It took us until 2004 to actually get there, then we moved to Hawaii permanently in Sept. of that year. We married in SA, but were so busy working we didn't have a real honeymoon except a weekend at Castle Avalon (just outside of New Braunfels). Later on we went to Pocotella, Idaho for an ROTC reunion... it became a running joke that that was the real honeymoon. You'd have to go there to know what I'm talking about. The highlight of the trip, other than the reuniion, was supposed to be a visit to the Potato Exhibition, but when we got there it was closed for the season - LOL! I can't tell you what an exotic location that was with rain, sleet and snow in October while SA was deluged with one of the worst floods in history!

Linda, I'm ROFLMAO!!!  Too bad the Potato Exhibition was closed for the season -- I'm sure that would have been the highlight of that trip!!!  That must have been October of 1998!!!  I was here in San Antonio during the flood.  The Woman's Club of San Antonio had a formal ball celebrating it's 100th Anniversary on Friday night -- a beautiful evening -- and woke up the next morning to one of the worst floods in history!!!
