As we all know, "traditional" media types are dying. All we need to do is turn on the tube to hear the latest and greatest on what paper is bankrupt. And, most of us who could, would zap past TV or radio commercials so we can get back into the "nitty-gritty" of the program. A very low percentage of us trust media ads. Kinda like Congress, "If their lips are moving...". On the other hand, a huge percentage of us trust a referral source from a friend or collegue. Sound familiar? This type of "personal referral" source of advertising can be a double edged sword as it can both help or hinder your business, so it behooves you to keep your ear to the ground and get and address feedback, both pro and con. For this to work, you must be engaged with your clients.

So, how can we as entrepreneurs get plugged into this personal "referral source" of advertising instead of being tied into the old monolog, me talk, you listen type of advertising? The answer? Get more engaged in the social medias such as blogging and especially micro-blogging. While blog sites such as Active Rain are great for the "whole milk" mentality, Twitter and Facebook are like skim milk, all the search engine nutrients without the fat of a website or blog. Both micro-blog platforms that are fast paced, engaging and ripe for almost instantaneous feedback. Impromptu electronic social mixers, if you will.

Bear in mind that both Gen X and Y'er were brought up with a bottle in one hand and a computer in the other. They do everything online. Are you missing a source for potential buyers because you are not being engaged in these social media types? Folks who grew up chatting on the Internet when chat-rooms were popular, are now your buyers, and they don't mind sharing their opinions with their online friends about you or your business for the world to see. To be brutally frank, they do not care about you or your ad campaign, they only care about what their friends think.

As more and more people are turning to the micro-blogging platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, how can you monitor what is happening in your area? The answer is "Elementary my Dear Watson". If you Tweet, use Nearby Tweets. Nearby Tweets will allow you to use keywords in your geographic area within a specified market radius. So the next time you run a social event, list a new house, do an open house, marketing campaign or just want to make new friends or get the pulse as to what is happening in your area, you can pop in and join in on the conversations. Better than putting the glass up to the wall...

Wishing all my fellow drips and tweeps a G-r-r-r-reat weekend... 8-)

Hi Michael, To add to this: Simply clicking on the site will automatically bring up posts in your area as the site detects your presence by ip location. So there's no immediate need to search if looking for a general circumference area around your city. Great post. Worthy of feature! This will make it very easy for people to get information they need within their own localities.

Sincerely, Castellum

Michael, you are absolutely correct. This past week has been great in many aspects, but one is that I have received compliments on my Internet presents from clients. I was Googled.

I still haven't made the Twitter leap, and aren't convinced the ROI is there, and there is only a fixed amount of time in the day, but there does seem like a growing consenus among the early adopters that if done well, can be beneficial, so thanks for the info.

Interesting... I wonder if I have been on their site before?  Or where nearby Tweets is getting the address that was there the moment I clicked to it.  Address that pops up  "close but no cigar."  Then again if I was there before why would I have used the correct street but wrong number....   I found a few people in my area that I was not following yet.

One day when I have time, I will do something with all the people following me on Twitter.  At this point we are back to basics in connecting with our sphere for business to survive this mess.  It is working and I can not change what works to an unknown, yet.........

Thanks for pointing this out.  We run events all over the country.  This will be a great way to let local folks know about the events.

Michael,

I will check this site out as it sounds very intriguing.  Love your line "While blog sites such as Active Rain are great for the "whole milk" mentality, Twitter and Facebook are like skim milk, all the search engine nutrients without the fat of a website or blog" it is a great way to look at the distinct differences that each of these sites have.  Take care and happy blogging to you!

Thanks for the tip, Michael! And once you've built a good following of Nearby Tweets, organize a tweet-up so you can meet in person and really reinforce the connection.
