Time to Back Up your Computer Data

If you're like me you have a ton of information on your computer. When was the last time up back up your computer? I use all Holidays such as Mother Day, and all other major holidays as reminders to back up my computer. I have an external Hard drive which requires some work on my part. I have been looking for something online for help. I found a site which charges $5.00 a month. One such service is Mozy.com. With more than one computer this is getting to be a pain so I would like to have a services that enables me to upload once a week. With broadband connections, backing up data during the night is a great option.

We have all these AR post and email, client information, paper work stored on the hard drives. We need to have them save from time to time.

You are so right, Frank.  Scares me to think of losing all that info - but do I back it up?  Well..............no.

Frank, I use an external hard drive too. Occasionally I'll back up some of the files onto CD-Rom, but perhaps not frequently enough.  Windows keeps nagging me to backup my files. I keep ignoring it.

Other than just staying on top of my business, clients, realtors, etc and trying to market and be responsive, software is my next biggest chore. There is always something, from blogs at AR that vanish or crash prior to posting them, to quick books glitches, etc.

I'd rather keep in on an external drive. Far less likely to be hacked or compromised. Just something to think about. -Charles

what a great idea, to do it on holidays. I'm a computer geek, so you would think that I would be doing it. But, to be honest, I forget... I will try the holiday reminder.

For all you folks backing up and storing on CD please be advised that in the last year some of my older CD's are no longer readable. My last external drive is now an internal drive the hardware driving it stopped functioning.  I like the slave drive option.  I keep all the good stuff on the slave and swap out master drives frequently.  Cloning an additional drive is pretty easy to do and you always have a backup.  Good Luck all.

Frank,

Back up is so important.  I had a recent computer crash, but fortunately Geek Squad was able to recover my photos, documents. and tax files.

I now have an external hard drive and mirror all my data on it so not to lose anything.

I also have a little portable hard drive to transfer information from my lap top to my desk top and vice versa.

I don't see the value of on-line storage, but it may work for some.  First why spend the money.  Second the security may not be sound.  I had some personal files on a storage site that appeared on the search engines.  I got rid of them.

I backed up today.  We had a bad experience today with HP printer software and it totally locked my computer up.  We backed everythign up and then finally got it to restore to a previous day.  But that aside I do back up quite a bit.  Mainly because of having a computer hard drive crash and there were pictures on there that I can never retrieve again.  We also back up to an external hard drive.

Frank,

This is good advice. I recently had the experience of having to have everything recovered from a laptop hard drive that crashed (the marchine was only 1.5 years old). Even though I should have know better that the last back up was from a month prior. Now I do a full backup every Sunday evening and incrementals throughout the week.

Jeffery, just finish backing up my laptop and desktop. It takes a few minutes but is often overlooked.

Backing up online really seems to make the most since to me.  If you back up on a hard drive there are still potential pitfalls.  Like the backup HD failing (which happened to me), or in extreme cases a fire or flood could destroy the drive and then where would you be?  So online offers me a restful night of sleep knowing my data is really protected.

House Front, I have been considering your choice. My external hard drive which i have been using to back up travels with me. I agree about the backing online. You dont have to worry about forgetting your harddrive and floods. thanks for that point.
