I return comment for comment. One of the things that I really like about living in San Diego is the tremendous year-round variety of fresh fruits and vegetables that are available.

My mom and her boyfriend both came here from New Jersey, and they constantly tell me that we have something special here with fresh fruits and vegetable.

Two fruits that I've always been addicted to are bananas and strawberries. There seem to be three seasons here for strawberries:

  1. Late winter/spring
  2. Summer
  3. Fall

The late winter/spring strawberries always seem to be the biggest, sweetest, and most delicious strawberries. All of our strawberries come from the Inland Valley agricultural area that runs down the center of the state from Sacramento to Imperial Valley east of San Diego. The best strawberries, though, always seem to come from Watsonville just south of San Jose.

I know strawberries require a lot of water, so I suspect that the late winter/spring strawberries are the best because of the winter rains. As the hot, dry summer moves on, the strawberries get smaller and are not as sweet.

Here's a couple of pictures of some Watsonville late winter/spring strawberries that I just got from Costco for less than $5.00. Most of the strawberries are golf-ball sized or larger.

Hi Jim,

Yum, these look so good. Just the other day while at a farmer's market I saw some beautiful big berries. The sign said they were grown locally in Irvine. I didn't even know they had any room left in Irvine for growers, but I was glad to hear it.

I guess those of us who live in So Cal just take things like fresh fruit for granted. I've got fruit trees myself in my own yard.

Hi Jim,

While California strawberries are good, somehow by the time they get to Canada they just aren't the same as our local product.  Heck I just want spring to get here.  The strawberries will have to wait until end of June.

Enjoy. Strawberries and bananas are my favourite also.  Plus kiwi, over yoghurt. Yum.

Jim my mouth is watering! That is of the things I miss most about CA, the ability to get a variety of fresh produce throughout the year. (I also really miss the beach!) Hmmm... I wonder if my Costco has some strawberries (though they wouldn't be locally grown).

Jim, our strawberries for most of the year come in from other states.  I love the fresh Michigan berries but our season is so short.

Yum!  Huge strawberries.  I envy the fresh fruits year around.  We are at the mercy for many fruits to come out of state.  One of my very favorites, strawberries!

I'm also a fresh fruit lover...  Spring Strawberry season is in full swing.  There is nothing better than strawberries and cream.
