World Baseball Classic

By
Real Estate Agent with Aubrey and Associates Realty

I got to watch part of the US vs Canada game in the World Baseball Classic today, as well as an inning or two of the Puerto Rico vs Panama game.  It was good to have baseball back on TV.  I know that "Baseball Purists" don't care for the classic, but if it increases the popularity of he game that I love here and abroad, I am all for it.  I like the fact that meaningful baseball is being played again.

I liked the enthusiasm with which these men represent their respective countries.  They play the game like they were either in Little League or in Post Season in the Major Leagues, it is good.  I love the fact that the Netherlands beat the Dominican Republic, who was supposed to run away from everyone in the competition.  I liked the fact that a Hall of Fame caliber player like Ivan Rodriguez is playing essentially for a job.  He isn't what he once was, but he is still not the worst out there.

Most of all I love the fact that each Baseball Season for me signals Spring time and the rebirth that Spring brings.  After a winter of bad news and discontent, I am really looking forward to Spring, and the sight of the World Baseball Classic, means that it is just about here!  Have a Great Sunday and Week!

Hi Tony and Darcy - I agree.  I also loved seeing the games and it gave me the feeling that spring is just around the corner.  However, I must admit that I also got excited when I saw our local courses putting out golf carts and the "other boys of summer" out on the course playing.

Jon, I understand, if it ever stops snowing, maybe our other boys of summer will be able to play also!

Tony, sorry, I don't like it. The concept is a good one but I just don't like the timing of it. Spring training is an important time for teams to mesh while getting prepared for the regular season. The WBC is a major interruption to the "team" aspect of spring training and I believe is counterproductive to the main product of major league baseball. I'd rather see this played during the winter ball season. Just my opinion.

Jim, everyone has their opinion, I would just as soon see this as the infinite number of split squad games that are going on right now.  I understand the need to mesh as a team, and I think that it is risky considering the chance of injury, but I still like it.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching all the games, except when the U.S. lost, of course. I got to go to one of the games in 2006 for the first World Baseball Classic, and although some of the second round games were here in San Diego, I didn't get to go.

I do think it's interesting that so many foreigners come to America to play baseball and make millions of dollars and then go home to play for their country when it comes time for the Olympics and events like the World Baseball Classic. I've always wondered what kind of immigration status foreign athletes have to have to "work" in the U.S., especially since we obviously have a good pool of baseball players from the colleges.

Jim, I admit I loved the Championship game between Korea and Japan, even after the US had lost.  I don't know the Visa status works for foreign ball players, but I am sure with the money that they are paid, they get what they need to have.  We do have some great players in this country, I am disappointed in people like Alex Rodriguez, who played for the US in 2006 and the Dominican Republic, before he got hurt.  If you are a US Citizen, then you should play for the US.  Anyway, thanks for all the comments on our blogs!
