I'd really like to know where the name came from, does anyone know?  If you do please pass it on.  In lady bugHouston, and Katy TX were I live we buy cartons of this wonderful little bugs every year.  They are perfect to let loose in your garden, landscaping, and just around the grass.  They eat the bad bugs that eat you plants & flowers, so they do a really good job for us and are cute at the same time.  The up-close with just the Lady Bug was taken at night on my patio furniture (it's white).  You should water the area you are going to release them in, and release them at dusk to increase your chances of having them hang out at your place rather than going to the neighbors yard to eat their pesky bugs.  The other was during the day waling, still can't believe I saw it....these little ladies are small! GO GREEN with Lady Bugs...good bugs for your gardens.

Tomorrow I'll show you another great shot of a friendly "GOOD" bug you need in your garden...it's not as cute as these prettlyprettly little lady bugs!

OOPS! I was so excited to see you back and posting I just went overboard cheering!! Here is what I found:

Q. How did the ladybug get its name?
A. In Europe, during the Middle Ages, insects were destroying the crops, so the Catholic farmers prayed to the Virgin Mary for help. Soon the Ladybugs came, ate the plant-destroying pests and saved the crops! The farmers began calling the ladybugs "The Beetles of Our Lady", and they eventually became known as "Lady Beetles"! The red wings represented the Virgin's cloak and the black spots represented her joys and sorrows. They didn't differentiate between males and females.

So good to see you my friend, I hope you are doing well!

Hi Liz, lady bugs are such a cute insect and quite helpful and harmless to us. I think their name comes from the great colorful clothes they wear. Women are known for their dazzling wardrobes don't you know? Russell and others might have the formal answer but I like mine better.

So very glad to see you posting more in the Rain. You know we all missed you and love you.

I have to be honest... I like the lady bug on the leaf.  The other one is a little too close. :-)

Liz, these are fantastic photos. I don't know why they call them Lady bugs. Maybe because they eat spiders? Yeah, that's it. Right. Maybe someone can answer this for us! I'm so glad to see you here. And, what wonderful contributions you make. Thank you with love. Deb

I haven't seen one of these lovely ladies in a long time.

Maybe they are called lady bugs because they are so lovely.

Howdy there Ms. Liz

Sure an glad to find a new post written by you, my dear friend.

Our good friend Russell, up at the very top of the comments, wrote the right answer. As to where the Ladybug got their name.

The beauty of the trees,

the softness of the air,

the fragrance of the grass,

always speaks your name.

My great nephew worked on this one in photo shop to get the light spot off.

As the old saying goes, honesty is the best policy.  I like the one on the plant better too for many reason, the contrast, the color, in nature & you can see were she ate some of the fine "hairs" on the leaf.  Still can't believe I saw it, the other photo was like I planted the buy .

My Debonair Silver Tongue Devil, I like your explanation better too.  But don't tell Russell he'll get his feelings hurt.  L

I love ladybugs.  One year we had bought a new house and that Spring lady bugs hatched out in our new living room.  It took us a long time to get them all out.  Every time we opened the door more would fly in.  I loved them and we had a big garden area and lots of flowers and vines covered our deck but you can only use so many lady bugs. :)

You are from Texas and never heard of buying lady bugs?  No you don't get them at the store, you get them at home garden places, pet stores sometimes have them.  I've found them at Pet Co, and also at Nelson Water Gardens.  Also Walmart garden center and Home Depot, just ask or look around in the garden dept.  Try some they are great!  L

Thanks for the help!
