CRISIS PART II: HOW DO WE KEEP OUR HEADS WHEN ALL AROUND US ARE LOSING THEIRS???

I am the kind of person who likes to look back and see where things could have been done differently. I do like to see where mistakes were made in order to avoid them in the future...So, take a look at this post I wrote in March of '09. I think it deserves a re-take, especially with what is going on right now with the Banks (BofA Especially) freaking out at what could be their "Waterloo". Unlike the battles that Napoleon was fighting when he met his, the battles being fought now are within the banks themselves, as they sort through the ethical and legal fiasco that still exists somewhere in the heap of MBS' that are now spread across the globe. It appears that the banks actually covered up the real facts about the housing crisis. They hired thousands of people to do the dirty work of signing documents stating that homeowners mortgages were scrutinized carefully before foreclosure, when in fact they were not! What is horrifying to me is the idea that the problems are so overwhelming that the banks peered into the abyss, saw the truth, then shut the door before the news could leak out into the light of day!

The banks are also dealing with the fear and anger of the homeowners who remain poised at the edge of the precipice, waiting to see if the banks will help help them out or throw them to the wolves.THERE IS NO PROTECTION FROM THE ONSLAUGHT

"These are the times that try men's souls"...the times that will change most lives with a sweep of the housing broom. I wanted to share again the moment in time that we all were facing as the world seemed to melt around us and as the die was cast for the next decade or more:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
March 8, 2009
ON September 18, 2008 the President (GW) woke up from a sound sleep and got a call on his red phone, probably from his treasury secretary, Paulson. "You won't believe what I just found out!---CitiGroup is about to go under; no more money in the coffers!"
President Bush: "How could this happen?" Paulson: "I don't know boss but it is happening and the rest of the banking community is lined up right behind them....there is no money!".(Citi is the largest  bank in the world with account holders in every major country).
President Bush:"How do we stop this? Get the CEOs and CFOs of all major banks on a conference call right now; we have to act immediately!".....and thus begins the biggest and most shocking wave of planned failures and bank bailouts any government has ever had to face.
I don't know if that is exactly how it unfolded, but you get the picture:
It is election time and all the preparation for a new president has taken the wind from the sails of the current administration. All the hype and the enthusiasm for the new leader has blinded most in the media to fall in line behind a historical and very charismatic new president.
Very little attention was paid to the "undertone" of suspicion about this new, young and vibrantly brilliant leader. No one wanted to let their better judgment surface for one single moment---it may not be correct and where would we be then? The media allowed the gnarly little voices, claiming "Marxist" connections and "Socialistic tendencies" to disappear in the flurry of the campaign.
Now, I don't know if these claims have a grain of truth in them; I do know that what is happening right now in the minds and hearts of my family, loved ones and fellow professionals is total and utter fear and terror of what we may be facing very soon...... But, back to the scene:
As each day passes and we still don't know what our government is really doing to protect it's citizens, the fear and terror is  paralyzing---people don't know what to do.....Do we wait to see? Do we speak up and maybe embarrass ourselves? Do we march? Do we crawl back under the covers and maybe even maybe turn off the TV and radio and not listen to any more of it?FEAR AND ANGER
Do we, as a nation, demand that we be informed of every detail in this debacle? Do we concede to the lulling sounds of the people now in charge: "Things will get worse", "This is just the beginning, more will fail", "This is as bad if not worse than the Great Depression" and on and on and on.....Do we need to hear this from our leaders? I think not!! I think we have every right to expect a positive, protective attitude; that is what is required to lead us out of this abyss....Do we need to cower and wait for the "inevitable"???
We are NOTmade of that "stuff"! We are Americans and we do have the ability to turn things around...and fast! We are in need of a shot of Adrenalin right now---maybe a quick glance at what we have accomplished when it comes to this country's Hellish experiences from the past:
  • 9/11-2001Symbolic of just what we are experiencing right now--a complete collapse of our financial WAITING FOR IT ALL TO EXPLODEsystems; a "flat-lining" of the life blood of our monetary systems. We survived it; some brave souls didn't and it is in their memory that we are obligated to fight this "veil of fear" that is controlling us right now.
  • 1929-The great depression took it's toll on a multitude of institutions and human beings; but most were able to rise again, up from the ashes of that frightening time. WE CAN SURVIVE A COMPLETE BREAKDOWN OF OUR FINANCIAL NETWORKS AND SYSTEMS!!!
  • 1860's-Civil War---CIVIL WAR! Think of it and think about how people dealt with THAT one! What a soul-stirring experience it was when it was brother vs brother, father vs son, uncle vs nephew, neighbor vs neighbor and on and on.....I hear it was hell! But we survived it! As a people and as a country in solidarity, we  came through that and we never looked back---this nation moved forward.
We, as a nation have always pulled together to get ourselves out of the way of a cataclysmic event! We can and we will get through this one!
John: Amazing! I feel pretty much the same way. It took me a while to adjust my life to where I am now and I must say I went through pretty fearful times---but now! Well, lets just say, I now see why it is going to be many, many years before we are able to say we are out of it! (the woods I mean!)
Paula, Yes this is the time we will be tested... just like our grandparents before us.  We need to ride out the storm productively and we will be there when the smoke clears.
Stan: This is taking a mighty long time to test, though! I wrote the original post in March of '09 and even that early we were fearing the worst. I would have though that we were in the worst of it at that time, but now the fear that I am feeling and seeing in others is palpable!
Paula - we are a strong nation and as with everything in life - there are good times, there are bad times and then there is the inbetween. Its getting our country to be of one mind (irregardless of what your political preference is). Our President is who he is and he is here for now, so we need to put our differences aside and figure out how to get this country back on track so we again can be the greatest and most respected nation.
This crisis was not created by any one act by any one person or country happening in any one month of 2008.
It is the direct result of over de-regulation of the banks under both Clinton and Bush and the concurrent insistence of the political leadership (of both parties, in both houses of the Congress, in two administrations) that irrational loans be made to help the poor and minority populations (the Democrats) or to increase home ownership (the Republicans and the NAR).
But even more than those factors - at the base of this crisis is too much debt in this country:  on the part of the federal government (including too much spending across the board) and on the part of individuals. No national economy can be strong when the people have a saving rate that is negative - including treating homes as ATM's.
Also at the root of the problem is an unwillingness of Americans to feel comfortable sending their kids to work in the factories that (ultimately) created our wealth.  So we ship our dollars overseas to buy the things our kids are too good to make here.  As we do so we ship our wealth overseas with every trip to Wal-Mart.
Also fundamental to this crisis is an educational system that is still at 1.0 (an industrial age sytem) when 3.0 would work better - that is:  we send teachers into classrooms to present information to a room full of kids with widely varying abilities, preparation and levels of home support.  Schools are failing because we are asking the impossible.  We need a system of individualized instruction delivered digitally with teachers only serving as coaches rather than presenters.
Also we have corporations (and a stock market) that look only to the next quarter instead of to the next decade or quarter century.
And we have a dozen other basic economic problems.
We are only now realizing that we reached our peak in the early sixties.
Until we fix these basic problems, any relief from crisis will be only temporary.
It's going to take a long time for recovery of our economy. I know it will happen. The question is, when?
Sherilyn: You said it! My goal in re-running this post is to get people to see that we really do not change that much from year to year--at least I don't think so. My opinion then is not that different from Mar '09 and it surprises me, yet that IS the case....we may learn nothing from this very long crisis, except that the more we change the more we stay the same!!!
Jim: I had to re-read each of your concise comments 2-3 times to fully take in the ideas that you have presented---I love IT! This is the kind of thinking we all need to start partaking in---free association and you got it all out there in 5 segments too! You need to write a post on the subject as well...I love that the re-running of this post has had so much interest again.
Thank you for a most relevant and insightful post and comments Paula....
We are in a countdown to doom and failure...Every great Nation had its turn to rule....and failed. Check history please because I do not want to list them all.  None of them thought of failing, but they did and they saw glimpses of it before they did.....We will fail too and the question is when...? Unfortunately, we are getting glimpses of it now.....The Constitution and the Bill of Rights are being manipulated and thwarted and this was never meant to be. While freedom and liberty are popular and in great demand, the vessels which hold these things dear...human beings...remain polluted and defective.....The only remedy for any permanent change is in the change of heart......and then the mind will follow
Richie: Thank you for your insight; however, I continue to feel that we will prevail--there is not nor has there ever been a country like this and we have a history of survival at all costs. Therefore I will hold the positive in my mind and the change that everyone was looking for with Obama will happen soon--only it won't be because of Obama but in spite of him that we will prevail.
Laurie: thanks for the link--I  read it and WOW! I love the sound of the sherriff telling them he can't evict knowing that the banks don't even know if the eviction is legit!!!....could this be the "sound" of the future? :)
Here's more good news in New York:
http://blogs.wsj.com/metropolis/2010/10/20/new-home-foreclosure-rules-for-new-york-state/
 At least it will provide homeowners an opportunity to sue the lawyers, if proper care isn't taken...amazing, all of this.
Laurie: I just had a chance to read this article and WOW! This is the Waterloo I talk about in this post---the banks can no longer go about doing as they please with the poor struggling homeowner. They are going to have to answer to the public and soon, God willing! Thanks for linking it!
