Pink ribbon for Breast Cancer Awareness

Personal story for you ladies and men - this story has been told before, but I did not get many comments and it was back in Oct. 2008 when I was brand new to AR.  I felt inspired to tell it again after reading Judy Jennings' blog today.

I feel that I would like to share with you the details of my cancer scare----so that it may help or save you or one of your loved ones. Although mammograms are very important - critical- they don't always find the "c" --- I had a suspicious spot on a mammogram which led to a needle biopsy which lead to a lumpectomy --

The result of the lumpectomy was that there was something suspicious on the very edge of what was taken out, so the surgeon wanted to go back and get a larger piece.

Boyd & Liz on Pink Denin DayMy Husband, Boyd & I did not have to think very long before we told the surgeon that we wanted the whole breast taken --- we didn't want to fool around and wish later that we had done this.

After the mastectomy, the results came back --- the area that was "suspicious" was benign, but there was another spot that was the "fast growing cancer" --- this was an area that would not have been found had we not done the mastectomy. Scary, isn't it?

In a follow up visit to the surgeon after the mastectomy, he said that I need to have mammograms every 4-6 months to carefully watch the other breast. Again, it did not take Boyd & me long to tell the surgeon --- "Let's get rid of the other one, too" --- 4 months after the first mastectomy, I had the 2nd one. They removed lymph nodes also. There was no other cancer found --- thank goodness!

I'm here to tell you that without the decision to have the mastectomy, I would probably be a very sick person today
Liz cheerleading the officeeven if alive because the lumpectomy would not have found the "fast growing cancer". Instead, I am very much alive --- cheering AgentOwned agent/owners on to success.

The moral of this story: please, if you or one of your loved ones has breast cancer, have them think seriously about the mastectomy. It could save their life. It saved mine.

If you are a young person, don't feel that you are free ---- more and more young women are being diagnosed with cancer all the time. Please have those mammograms regularly and if cancer is found, think mastectomy.

Hope this message will save at least one life.

Please go to Judy Jennings' blog and watch the video about IBC --- if you have not seen it, you really need to.

Mama Liz,

God was not ready for you yet...That was what I told my lending assistant back in Jan 2002 when she underwent a very radical surgery for abdominal cancer...MUSC told her to go home and die...her husband found a doctor in Washington, DC that does a very radical procedure for the cancer she had...4 days after her surgery, clots were progressing to her lungs...I was asked to get her mother up to DC 9:30 that Friday morning...at 12:30 we were on the road...she would not fly being 911 was very fresh...I will never forget what she told me when I walked into the room...she said, " I wish I had not had the surgery"...My reply was, you have to look through the windshield now...15 different things were removed from her body...chemo was poured into her abdominal cavity while she laid on the table for a 90 minute soaking...through a shunt, this procedure was repeated the next 5 days...Yes, she is without some normal things today...however, she is here...Mama Liz, the best thing I learned from her is her attitude about life...the follow up doctor visits would always be very apprehensive as to the outcome...no matter, he attitude would always be a smile...yet today, she smiles....yet today she is cancer free...It takes some battles or bumps in the road, for all to have a closer walk with thee...Keep Smiling...Oh, by the way, I always see a smile on your face....
