I just ate the best burger of my life. Ok that is a pretty bold statement to some people, but I think it is true. My photographer friends, Laura Barton and Judy Wilder of "Barton Wilder Custom Images" took me to Phil's. I hated to admit to them that I had not been to Phil's yet. In my defense it is far north of the river, and I am a south/central Austin girl.

Phil's Burgers is the sister company to a longtime homegrown Austin favorite Amy's Ice Cream. Presently there is only one location on Burnet Road just south of 2222/Koenig Lane. The Amy's Ice Cream is next door to Phil's Burgers and they even have a connecting door between dining areas. They took a building that used to be a garage/auto shop and did a hip conversion into a burger joint. When the weather is nice, they roll up the two big garage doors full of windows so patrons can enjoy the nice weather. The booths feel like they came out of a 50's diner. They even have an old style photo booth for your enjoyment while you wait for your burger.

Ahhh, I have to talk about the burgers. The buns are all freshly made by Phil's employees and they are delicious. My favorite burger is the "78704", it has a bun made with jalapenos and a little cheese in it. This burger has: Monterrey jack cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, avocado and jalapenos and a spicy chipotle mayo. When I tasted the burger I thought I had died and gone to burger heaven. It is really that good. The Violet Crown burger has bleu cheese and lettuce and tomatoes and more cheese. The hand craft multiple signature Austin burgers as wll as any custom order you can dream up. They also serve regular fries and sweet potato fries. I have not had a good sweet potato fry since the Texicalli Grill closed two years ago.

I have a few regrets about discovering Phil's Burgers;

    1. I did not bring a camera, and neither did Laura & Judy. So I am unable to show you how great their food looks as well as tastes.

    2. I only have one stomach. (My diet resumes tomorrow!!) 

    3. There is not a south location yet. I am sure my letter writing campaign and petition will soon convince Amy that she needs to bring Phil's into the 78704. If you want to sign the petition please call or email me & I will be happy to get your name on the list!

On the bright side my taste buds were dancing and singing yummy yummy all the way home!! I am sure your taste buds will do the same once you make your first visit to Phil's Burgers. Oh by the way, some Amy's ice-cream makes a wonderful desert after the burger, that is if you have room!
