The 4th Infantry currently based out of Fort Hood - Killeen Texas has been arriving home from a year long deployment in Iraq all week.  Our son Sergeant Tarren Peterson's plane arrived yesterday.  We went to Fort Hood for the Welcome Home Ceremony and to pick him up for 4 days of R & R.  This is his second deployment but our first time to be able to attend a welcome home ceremony as his first deployment he was based in Germany.

We really did not know what to expect.  We were told the approximate time of the day before the ceremony and they did a good job of keeping us updated as it got closer.  The ceremony was held at Cameron Field which is the 4th ID's parade grounds.  A large tent was set up with food, soft drinks and a video playing.  The video was interrupted ever so often to let us know where the plane was.  As the plane landed we were able to watch it on video.  I think that was probably my most emotional point of the whole day.  It was so INCREDIBLE to know that our son was on Texas soil again.  The video is less than a minute but gives you an idea of the excitement.

It took quite some time for the plane to park and the soldiers to walk off.  I have another short video of the soldiers walking off the plane. I wish I had panned the room more than I did but I'm just learning this flip video. This one is a little repetitive so you only need to watch for a short time.

At this point we went outside to wait for them.  They came in on a 747 so we are talking about somewhere around 300 soldiers so it took quite some time for them to get over to Cameron field from the airfield.  There were something like 7 or 8 buses.  The soldiers unloaded behind the buses and then the buses pull away and there are the soldiers.  It reminded me of those home shows where the bus hides the house.  In this case it was the buses hiding the soldiers.  People were yelling move that bus.  It was so exciting when the bus moved to see all the soldiers standing there. The actual ceremony was only about 5 minutes and the soldiers and families were released to find their loved ones. I hope you enjoy the following real estate show of the ceremony.

I can't tell you the relief I am feeling having our son back on Texas soil. Tarren will be getting out of the Army May 1st and is immediatly planning on attending college.

Marchel - I have thought about you and your family a lot this year while you had this additional worry - I found it totally comforting to read your post - since the last time your son came home my little brother left for Iraq - and now - your son is coming home and again my little brother is leaving again. Enjoy yourselves with celebrating your life and family

Marchel,

Thank you to Tarren for his service to our country.  There is nothing better than knowing a loved one or friend is back safe and out of harms way.  We pray for our troops and your post was another wonderful affirmation that a prayer was answered.

And a big thank you to you and all the Moms and Dads out there who raise kids wiho join the military.  It takes a lot of character to volunteer to join the military and that comes from their parents.

Welocme home 4th ID, job well done!

Marchel, I thought about you all weekend. Thanks for sharing Tarren's homecoming with us. I started crying watching the first video and I'm still crying. :) Happy tears, that he's home, safe with his family. Last year at this time, we were waiting for my now son-in-law to come home. Thesa & Pippa, we'll keep your brother and cousin in our prayers, as well as all of our military men who are still there.

Marchel - Exciting day.  Thank you for sharing the event and thanks to Tarren for his service to us all.

I am also rather pleased that AR has featured your story, as I might have missed it in the normal groups where you post.

Applause for TarrenWelcome home to Tarren - My best wishes to him on moving on to his education (although I imagine he has had quite an education already in Iraq).  As I have watched the news coverages from the Iraq years, I am impressed with the quality of our military.  And I keep asking, with all the problems we have at home, where do we find these great kids who willingly serve their country with such credit and distinction.  And what positive changes they may bring to our culture when they are all home and part of our local scene again.

LYNDA, I can't tell you the relief I feel having our son upstairs sleeping!  WOO HOO!!!

DIANE, I'm so excited that we were able to be at one his welcome home ceremonies.  We are blessed that he is based only 3 1/2 hours from us so we had that opportunity.  I had no idea what to expect.  I REALLY got the most emotional when I saw the plane's wheels hit the ground.

JOAN, I'm glad the videos turned out.  I was not sure if they would.  My flip mino ran out of battery time at the outdoor ceremony but that was just as good.  The music was blaring and then when they started talking we could not hear a word they said it was so soft so it was just as well to do that one with pictures.

PIPPA, I would encourage you to go to his welcome home ceremony.  I had no idea what was involved but it was very exciting!  I know it is more for the families than the soldiers, they just want a hot shower.  Our son has taken so many long hot showers since he has been home this short time that I can't even count them.  He gets out May 2nd and his next stop will be Montgomery College for a year to get his basics out of the way.

MARGARET, THANK GOD that these young men and women are treated differently than we treated our Vietnam War Veterans  Hero's.  I can't tell you how many people come up to our son and thanked him for his service.

STEVE, Thanks and Thanks!  I feel like a HUGE burden has been lifted from my shoulders.

JO, This was my first military homecoming and you are right there is nothing else like it.

JASON, When those buses moved away and all those soldiers were standing there it was quite INCREDIBLE!!!  It did remind me of those house shows but even more dramatic!  Shoot that was probably where the house people got the idea.

ROB, Thanks for your service to our country as a Marine.  The service has been good for our son.  He went in a boy and is coming out a young man.  It has taught him a disciplinee that I don't know he would have learned otherwise.  I have no doubt that now he is going to do GREAT in college and life.

JUDI, I'm glad your son-in-law made it home safely also.  Out of Tarren's company they only lost two men this time but it happened to be the company commander and his driver.  Our son said he was a good man and well liked.  It happened only about one month in to this first tour.  According to our son it is very quiet over there now although you don't hear that on the news!

NIKE AIR FORCE, Thank God that these men and women are not treated the way we treated out Vietnam Veterans.  Thank your husband for his service to our country.

MARK, This unit is truly the boots on the ground.  The 4th Infantry will be leaving for Afghanistan in 2011.  This time our son will be home in college.  Freedom is not free and it is young men and women like those in the 4th Infantry that protect that freedom for us.

LINDA, Thanks!  He has to go back to Fort Hood on Thursday so I expect we will have those steaks tomorrow evening.  That should have given his stomach time to readjust.

TED, Our daughter works as a flight attendant with a charter company that moves our troops and she would totally agree with you.  She has been living in New York City and has enjoyed the troop flights as they remind her of the boys back home.  I told her those are the boys back home.  I do have to say Texas is well represented in our military!  By the way I don't know why I didn't think of posting this in Silent Majority but it is there now!

NATALIE, Thanks for being on Tarren'sprayer list through both tours.  I am so relieved to have him back home!!!  My parents are elated also.  They will be leaving for their summer home in Colorado in just a few months.

BARB, Thanks!  My shoulders feel much lighter today!

MISSY, I was smiling from ear to ear.  It was hard to find him in that crowd and then they of course all has the same outfit on.  I was the one who spotted him and what a relief.  I'm glad that we were close enough to attend a homecoming celebration.  I had no idea what one entailed!  I'm glad I have learned all this technology to be able to record it.  Just a few short years ago I would not have been able to do that.  Like you said it was Karen's great blogging experiment that really turned everything around for me.

CHARLES, God bless the USA!  I was wishing the song I'm proud to be an American would have been available to use as background music but it was not on the real estate tours list.  I guess I need to email Jeff and request it.

GARY, The way we treated our Vietnam Veterans Hero's is a crying shame.  THANK GODthat we learn by our mistakes.  Even though this war has become unpopular our son has always been treated withthe utmost respect.  We know a little secret about this Iraq War that the media is not sharing WE WON!  We won with NO HELP from the media though!  Our son was busy catching bad guys the first half of his tour but after he returned from his R & R in November he spent the rest of his tour playing tiddily winks.  That is not a bad thing as the Iraqi's took over catching the bad guys.

RUSSELL, I have appreciated all the encouragement from my AR Friends family.  It was great to have so much support from so many people.  I am so excited that Tarren will be attending college here soon.  He will be out in time to take some courses this summer and then the new GI bill starts in August.

CANDY,Thank  you my friend.  Thanks so much for being the shoulder I could cry on through this last 4 1/2 years.  I am so glad he is finally going to be back in the states on a permanent basis.

That is great news! I'm happy to know he's back on home ground and will dedicate the meyer lemon we're planting this coming weekend to his service. He had just completed basic training when we first met you and I remember the bravery with which you tried to hide your fear and anxiety as you told us about him. And now here we are with great news of his homecoming! I can't imagine how relieved you must feel. We hope all the best for him and all of you. Congratulations!

MIKE, I am very proud of him and what a RELIEF to have him back in the USA.  I wish I could have played I'm Proud to be an American on that last real estate show; but it was not available.

MARY ANNE, I am so glad that we lived close enough to come to the ceremony.  It was very emotional!!  Now all he wanted was a shower but it was a VERY SHORT ceremony once they finally got them over there.

TOM, I'm thrilled about both but the 300,000 pales in comparison!

CYNTHIA, He is out shopping right now but I have dinner ready when he gets home.  It was so nice this afternoon not to be checking and seeing if he was on instant messenger.  The main time I would talk to him was between 3:00 to 5:00 PM as that would be when he was getting off work.  WOO HOO I can pick up the phone and call him.

ALICE, He was off for leave in November and once he went back he really didn't even need to be there any longer.  Have you seen the email about the Brits talking about us winning the war?  Jeeze they can talk about it and we don't!

RICH, I'm so glad that he came home to a hero's welcome.  It was a shame how our Vietnam Hero's were welcomed home.  Thank you for your service!!

JOE, That time has passed somewhat quick and then I look again and it seems like he has been in the service forever.  I'm so relieved that he is home and almost out!!

SANDY, I'm so relieved I can't tell you.  You have of course seen him since birth and who would have thought he would have been over in Iraq.  It was very surreal as Tarina was heading for a troop flight in Kuwait the day he was flying home so they passed in the sky.  I never would have thought BOTH of my children would be over in Kuwait, yet alone Iraq.

Marcel - I know that wonderful and indescribible feeling of having your son home, and back on safe ground.  My son Randy, retired after 20 years in the US Navy.  Randy had a particular "gift" for always being on the wrong aircraft carrier at the wrong time.  He was on the Kitty Hawk when it was the staging area during the first gulf war.  I actually caught a glimpse of him running across the hanger bay with a 50 calibre machine gun on his back (via CNN).

He was on the Abraham Lincoln, when it had just entered the Persian Gulf, when the US Cole was hit, and the carrier couldn't make port for security reasons for 5 months.  There was just Randy, the carrier, and 5200 men.  And, he was on the Abraham Lincoln when President Bush declared, "Mission Accomplished."

There was never a mother more glad to welcome her son home, and into retirement.  It was a feeling of significant pride, and enormous relief.

TARA, Isn't technology GREAT!!  It was so cool watching that plane land on the big screen!!

SHIRLEY, He is so well adjusted this time.  After his first tour he came back rattled.  I guess being mortared every day will do that to you.  I have so enjoyed the last few days.  He heads back to Fort Hood tomorrow but is planning on coming back this weekend.  WOW is it good to have him home.  The first day he was here both my husband and I called him on his cell phone just because we could.  Funny thing is we found out later that we had both done that (lol).

CARL and CEIL, I agree!  Our son might have considered staying in the military but he was getting tired of being deployed every other year.

DALE, Thanks!  Wow I don't know that I have ever had two features in a row!

THESA, I will keep Danny in my prayers.  By the way I talked to Chris today.  She is doing good; staying busy.

GAIL, This tour was MUCH better than the first.  Once I found out he was in such a better place the second time I breathed a sigh of relief but there's NOTHING like having him back in the USA.

GARY, It has been several wonderful days.  It was so much fun to take him our for lunch today!!!

DEBBIE, You are right!  I did not come from a military family so this entire thing has been new to me.  My Dad was in World War II but that was a long time before I was ever thought of.  Since our son was extended he ended up being in the Army for the exact same amount of time as my Dad was.  My Dad was drafted before Pearl Harbor.

WENDY, I agree with you!  Freedom is not FREE!

MYRL, Oh my 20 years!  I thought 5 years seemed like a long time.  Our son tonight was saying how fast it went but it seems like he has been in forever to me.  I guess it is all in the perception.  Your son sure had some experiences!!!

KRIS, You truly know how I feel right now.  It is like a HUGE burden has been lifted.  This tour was a world away from his first tour but it was still so hard to know that he was in the Middle East.  I thought they did a GREAT job with their choice of songs also.  I wish "I'm proud to be an American" had been available on the real estate show that I did on the last one but it might be they can't get the music without words.  I did just request it though.

JUDY, Thank you and thank your for being on his prayer list.  I feel such a RELIEF!!  I would try to turn it all over to God but I'm so good at taking it back after I give it to him.

KATE, I love your title!!!  I'm so happy that he was based close enough for us to get to go to the award ceremony!  So many of his friends are from back east which would have made it so hard.  He was out here all day yesterday washing the Texas dirt off of his car so he could drive it back to Fort Hood today.  Less than 2 months until he will be out of the Army!!

Marchel  Don't apologize for your photos - you captured both the thrill and excitement.  I'm not sure I would have been as patient.  Arthur and I are happy for your family

RUSSELL, Sugar and Penny were so cute.  It appears they found a nice forever home.  Tarren really hit it off with Dundy.  We were informed that it was okay if Dundy got on his bed.  He is planning on going to our local community college for a year and then wants to go to A & M WOO HOO!!

KAREN, It is the prefectionist in me!!  It is so hard to get good pictures at dusk.  Tarren is on his way home for the weekend right now.  Wow is it wonderful to have him close enough that he can come home for the weekend.  May 2nd he will be done!!!

Marchel, this was SO NEAT!!! Your son looks like his mom, and just watching your video and the stills and hearing the music was special. Thanks for sharing. ;-)

TERI, I have been on cloud nine ever since last Saturday.  Dang if he didn't spin his car out on 290 today coming home from Fort Hood (good thing I was still praying for those angels to surround him because they did).  He did a 180 and didn't go off the road or hit anyone.  We are having some wet weather and he had his cruise control on. I'm sure that is the last time he will use his cruise when it is raining.

By the way I learned all of what I did in the post from the rain!

Marchel, we have to always pray for our children - it does work - as you know. So glad he is okay. A mom's worse nightmare. ;-)

RUSSELL, Thanks for sharing in our joy.  We had steak tonight for Tarren and a friend from Fort Hood.  They will both be getting out soon and both plan on going to college.  His friend got an even bigger stop/lost than our son.  His friend was supposed to get out last March and instead was in Kuwait on his way back to Iraq on the day he was supposed to get out.  Tarren plans on going to the community college for a year and then wants to go in to Marine Engineering at Texas A & M.

TERI, Isn't that the truth.  Shoot my Mom still prays for me and I LOVE IT!

Home safe!  I am so happy to hear it made it back.  I'm sure the ceremony was wonderful, but the true prize is having your son back.

CHRISTINE, The actual ceremony was VERY SHORT which was way cool because all those soldiers wanted was released to their families.  Now we were there an hour before waiting so it was a little long for us but hey we didn't have to pull a year in Iraq.

JIM, So how do you know that Bravo stuff?  Were you in Intelligence?  It is way COOL to have him back in the USA and as of May 2nd he will again be a civilian.

JENNIFER, It is a huge relief.  Now I can't wait until he is no longer commuting to Fort Hood.  I did say commuting as he is coming home every weekend.  He only has two more weekends to make the trip then he is on leave from April 4th through the 27th and gets out of the Army May 2nd.  He lost control of his car in the rain coming home Friday and did a 360 on 290.  I'm sure he is okay because of those angels I prayed to protect him.

Marchel:  What a great video.  Very well done.  You must have ended up all melted down into a pool of butter while waiting for Tarren to emerge from that great group of heroes.  What a wonderful day for you both.  Hooray for you !  Hooray for Tarren !  How great to have him back.  Take care...

KAREN ANNE, I have to admit I did melt into a pool of butter when I saw that plane taxi in with our son on board.  I'm glad that we lived close enough to go to the ceremony.  The actual ceremony was all of 5 minutes which is as it should be.  All those soldiers wanted was to see their family and have a shower.

LARA, Thank you!  I can't tell you how many times I have watched the one of the plane taxiing in.  I just called him on the phone because I could.  For the last going on 5 years he has not been in the states much so MOM is thrilled to have back on Texas soil.

Thanks so much for sharing Marchel.

Each & every time the National Anthem is played no matter how much I  say "I won't cry" I do.  Do you think that's why I don't have  medical problems yet???

Our FREEDOM IS NOT FREE.  Our Freedom is bought & paid for by many many lives.  Thank your son for us all. And a great Thank You to all our armed forces.

Nellie, Thanks for stopping by my favorite post. I can come to this post and go through the videos (that I took) and start weeping every time.  I will never forget watching that plane land.  We owe so much to our armed forces.  They are why we have the freedom to be on here giving our opinions (sometimes controversial).  Our freedom is not FREE it was paid for with a price.

Our son is doing GREAT in college and it is so thrilling to have him home!

Mary, Thanks for stopping by my favorite POST of all time!!  It was a joyous day.  What a relief to have our son home safe and sound after two tours of Iraq.  As I said he is now a college student.  This year he went to our local community college but he has his application in to Rice and Texas A&M.; he wants to be a Mechanical Engineer.  Rice is a bit of a long shot but we are for sure he will get in to A&M.  Both are good schools.  He will know in the next couple of weeks.
