I would estimate that 80 - 90% of the home inspections we perform are vacant, usually foreclosures or short sales.  Unfortunately many of them are left in very bad condition, making for extra long inspections.  Some people take a sledge hammer to everything they see, some let their pets run wild and leave little presents behind, some leave personal items behind... and luckily there are also those decent people who leave the house in nice condition.

Anyway, I saw something I had never seen before the other day during a home inspection.  Look at the picture below... but be forewarned, the image you are about to see may be disturbing to some...

I just don't understand it, why would someone leave their hand behind?  I don't know about you, but I certainly need both of my hands.  I hope it was not the hand they have to write with.

Okay, okay, this is what home inspectors do when they see a kitchen sink and the pipes underneath not connected... you gotta have some fun out there...

Of course, the beginning paragraph still holds true: many of the foreclosed properties we're inspecting are in bad condition and really need a professional home inspection.

I hope this gives you a little more information about a professional home inspection, and maybe a laugh or two, and its value.  Be safe out there.

Joseph - this is too funny.  The nice clean sink and granite countertops would lead you to believe that the sink actually works.  Unbelievable.  Thanks for your blog.  I'll be sure to look under the sink from now on!

Be sure check under the sink before running the water. I have forgotten on occasion and once or twice had a nice puddle to clean up. I gotta hand it to you, funny! :o

James, great advice, definitely always look under the sink first.

Mike, it's amazing what some of these people will take from the house.

Thanks for the laugh.  I needed one right now as I have just finished setting up a new wireless network at my place, and I hate messing with computers.  This was my second attempt, and I am writing this wirelessly.  Yay!

Congrats David!  I hooked one up a while ago, and though it's not fun hooking it up, the rewards are great with a wireless network.

Joseph,

Maybe they left that behind in case you needed a hand with the inspection.

Charles, that was my employee, he got in trouble and had to take a time out under the sink.
