soccer ball

Passing the soccer ball correctly is perhaps the most important skill set that budding soccer players have to master. It is often the Pass, not the shot that enables the scoring of the goal.  In soccer terminology, that pass is revered...it even has a special name.  It's called an Assist.

Passing the ball correctly and accurately allows a good team to dominate the playing field. One of the drills which our sons practiced over and over was called "touch & pass."

I'll be honest with you, when I first saw this particular play in operation on the field, I didn't like it.  Here was my son blazing down the field with other players in hot pursuit...the sidelines cheering with vigor and the coach was yelling....PASS THE BALL!!!  What? Why?

Well, it took me some time and education from my kids to understand the finer nuances of the game.

In soccer, it is important to regain control of the ball and to maintain that control at all times.  When a ball is passed across the field, it comes at a player with a force and momentum of its own. If a player does not Secure the pass, the ball controls the play not the player.  To the bystander, the difference may not be readily discernible, but it's a significant issue which will affect the next aspect of the play which is ACCURACY.

Why Accuracy Matters...

Without control, it will be impossible for the ball to be passed with ACCURACY.  A skilled soccer player will touch the ball in a manner which allows him to CONTROL the ACCURACY of the next action which is to PASS it to a properly positioned team mate.

By being in control of the ball, the player ensures that the pass is just slightly ahead of the team mate giving him the incentive to move forward and advance the play towards the goal.  A good passing game also keeps the offensive line off balance because the ball is continually changing sides over the field thereby taking away the ability of the offense to gang up on the player who eventually shoots for the goal.

Steadying the Transaction...

In a successful real estate transaction, one can also see the elements of a good passing game in motion.  Coordination of a transaction is one of the most important skills that a good real estate agent brings to the table.  It starts with steadying the game by selecting the RIGHT PRICE

moving the ball forwardOften homeowners are excited and/or misinformed about the current dynamics of the real estate market. When people enter the real estate market with unrealistic expectations, this produces a destabilizing force. It is the job of a good agent to steady the conversation, educate and give the home owner the information that ACCURATELY reflects the current terms and conditions of the real estate market in their area.

Moving the Deal Forward ...

Once, the right price has been SET, a good agent sets in motion a number of actions which will MOVE THE BALL FORWARD.  These include: Executing a Brilliant Marketing Plan which highlights the Home Listing Features on the Multiple Listing Service, Contacting interested parties in the community and within the agents' referral network, Incorporating the latest Media and Web 2.0 Applications including Blogs, Open Houses and Expanding the listings' accessibility on the World Wide Web.

Securing the Goal!

soccer shoesThese activities, over time will SECURE A SALE. At this point, the final coordination goes into effect with Negotiations, Transaction Management, Inspections, Repair Coordination when applicable and finally culminates in a SUCCESSFUL CLOSING.

All this team works requires an agent who has their eyes of the Right Ball and knows how to work with their team to make sure your goal of Selling Your home is Accomplished while you're on the playing field.  Failure to do so will result in the game ending without Scoring...in real estate it's called an Expired Listing.

Lola,

As I read this, I recalled the many times I've read complaints by listing agents about someone else advertising their listing.  If the goal is "the goal" I'd be happy for every possible "assist."  Great post.

Lola.  Brilliant.  I thought of the basketball skill of "assists" when I read this since I'm more familiar with basketball.  You're right, in team sports, it's the goal or basket that scores points, not the player.

I loved this.

Sally, you're funny!  This is why I watch soccer and my kids play it!  But seriously, when I began to understand the wisdom of this strategy, I understood why the team went so far.  They ended up playing for the national championship at Disney one year.  It gave me renewed respect for focused teamwork.

Hi Mike, Thanks for your comment.  I'd agree that the goal is the 'goal', but not every assist is necessarily a great one.  An assist which is focused and targeted to the right player at the right time is the one which enables scoring.  That's why teamwork can be such a valuable skill set within a real estate team.  If the team looses control of the ball or the listing, then scoring becomes a matter of luck not skill.

Lenn, Great to meet a fellow basketball player!  I loved the sport and played it all through highschool.  A great pass in basketball does the same thing.  It moves the ball effectively toward the basket.  A team with a great passing game tends to win!

Mike, thanks for stopping to weigh in particularly as a soccer coach.  I will always be grateful for the coaches who worked with my kids through the years.  They taught them not just the disciplines of soccer but skills which built character in life too.  Appreciate your comment.

LOVED it! That was such an engaging way to talk about team work in real estate. Maybe some of your creative thinking and writing will rub off on me. Thinking outside of the nomal box is awesome! Team work is kay and yet so many feel that's it's just one for all and all for one. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this it was great and kept me interested. I am trying to become a better blogger. I love how you customized your blog. I am still trying to figure out how to do that as well. Any tips?

This is wonderful.  I always welcome an assist and don't mind marketing for some other agents if they need that extra exposure.   We have too many "ball hoggers" in the business that don't see the benefit of the assist.  Thank you for the great thought.

I love to read your posts. How relevant! So simple and understandable.

And I used to love the game of soccor, way back before it became popular. We played it at recess in grade school!

My brother lives in Lakeville IN and his boys are awesome soccor players. It's a great game!

Congrats on moving into # 1 in Michigan!

Erica, Thanks. :)

Andrea...In soccer, hogging the ball results when a player does not understand the true nature of the game.  In real estate, I think it occurs when agents don't understand the importance of cooperation and coordination in a transaction through good communication.

Fran, I was just using a play on the 'assist' which is common jargon in a lot of sports including soccer and basketball.

Kate, creative marketing is important; perhaps even more so today with so much competition.

Marilyn, I was a soccer mom.  My kids are older now and have moved on to other things.  The championship game that the kids played was several years ago.  The members of that team have moved on, but the lessons they learned still remain.

The analogy was spot on.  As for comment #2...I understand the point, but advertising another agents listing without the permission of the agent is a violation of the code of ethics.  You might not mind, but other do.  If someone wants to give my listings more exposure I always say YES, but that is after I see how they intend to do it.

Mindset is everything.  I am playing a hockey game tonight and I guarantee we will win.  Cocky....perhaps; but there is no thought of losing.  Likewise, there is no thought of me not losing in this real estate battle.  We are actively hiring and growing.  Take that market........

Terry, controlling the ball starts with providing accurate information at the listing appointment and assisting the seller to make sure the home is priced accurately for the current market.  Once you loose control at that early stage of the game, it's hard to bring the ball back in line.  But when it's done right...you're correct; everyone on the team looks marvelous.

TLW...pardon my ignorance, but is 'Keep Away' sort of like 'Capture the Flag?'  It sounds like a game which could be a lot of fun especially if played against someone who liked to have fun and was humorously creative. :)  Now, as to the implications of that game for real estate...well, it could make the imagination run wild with possibility.

Valid point Simon.  A seller chooses an agent based at least in part on their perception of the agent's ability to market their home.  When that responsibility is assumed by an agent without permission, it creates problems.

Tim...hey, I like your attitude!

Walter, thank you for your comment.

Lola,

Nice analogy.  You also as a professional, as a homeowner, or as a buyer have to allow others to assist you properly and advise you without jumpint to your emotions.  That is hard for a homeower or buyer sometimes, but very important in scoring the goal.
