No Such Thing As A "Part Time" Agent...

By
Real Estate Agent with WEICHERT, REALTORS® - Briotti Group CT RES.0785956

I know I'm going to get into some trouble for this, but here it is:

I had written Getting Rid of "Full Time/Part Time" Labels.... back in January as a reflective piece on how I was not going to allow the label of part time to hinder my success as a real estate agent.

Today, I went into my local realtor board's office to make payment on my dues and got a whole new perspective on the subject.

I was, of course, talking up AR with Anne, the member services person and had mentioned my post on the topic of part-timers, as I had wanted to join a committee, but because of my day job, could not commit to the time frame that most committees meet.

Know what she told me? "An agent asked me one time if there were prorated dues for part-timers. I told them, there's no such thing - you pay the full amount of the dues. You're either a Realtor, or you're not."

That made so much sense, I told her that she had just given me another topic to write about on my AR blog (well, here it is!).

She's absolutely right. We pay our MLS fees, our license fees, and our board fees in full, so why should we be considered "part time"? Because we don't sit in the office everyday? Because we are not "on call" 12 hours a day? Because we are not reading about the current market every other minute? Because we are not cold calling prospects 8 hours a day?

Absurd, I say.

Don't call me a "part-timer" anymore, I say. I'm a Realtor, period.

Just because you get full time work done is a shorter period of time does not make you a part timer.  It makes you good at your profession.  Well said...

Great post there, my friend!  I agree wholeheartedly.  As long as you do your very best for your clients and customers and pay your dues.  With this depressed market, I think a lot more of those full-timers are facing day jobs too.  My mama taught me to never say never, and above all to not be too quick to judge another's position.  Keep up the good work!

William,

Good for you!!!

However, being a Realtor is about providing a service to clients/customers.  Hard to do when you are committed to a 40 hour work week of servicing another industry.  Few can do it...but if you can,  much success.

William,

Labels don't mean much to me either. Part-time/full-time-- just a short hand way to describe main form of income. Within reason, call me anything.  Just pay me for successful transactions. Good luck with all your jobs.

It is not possible to be part time in real estate and be a true fiduciary to clients....as one does not know the market.  Who cares if one only wants to make $10k a year, the question arises as to whether the client receives proper service. This is a full time business, bottom line.

Tina - Absolutely! I haven't had a complaint from any of my clients yet.

Lori - I think you just hit the nail on the head. Well said!

Celina - Truly. I know several realtors who are in very dire straits right now because it is the only thing they have going for them. It is comforting for me to know that I don't have to worry about medical insurance due to teaching...

Linda - the first part of your comment I agree with; however, teachers don't spend 40 hours a week in school. We spend an inordinate amount of time outside of the school doing the real work of preparing lessons, organizing, etc. and I must say that after 10 years of doing that, it is relatively easy for me to devote my time and energy to both my students and my clients -and don't forget, we get holidays, vacation time, sick time - time that we can use for other things than teaching...

Betty - I'm glad that the point was made. It needs to be more often, it seems...

Wayne - Another perspective on the use of "full-time, part time" labels. Thanks for sharing.

Tim - Poppycock. I am a true fiduciary to my clients when I am my classroom and outside of it. There are only certain times ina day when people are actually available to see a home - most of them not duruing the regular day, as most people do work during the day. You occasionally have clients who work a second or third shift job, and it is only then that your availability during the day becomes problematic - but not impossible to deal with. Whenyou are up-front with your clients about your time schedule, they are more than willing to work with you, as long as you are providing them with the service they expect of you. I would dare to say that I know my market just as well as some of the "full time" agents I work with...

I really agree with your comment, as I also have a full-time job (for another month), but I always give my clients the best possible service. I know full-time agents who don't give the kind of face -to-face contact I give my clients. Full-time or part-time, its the service that matters and your clients won't care as long as the service is top notch.

Providing the very best of service to Sellers and

Interesting prospective.  You are indeed a REALTOR. . . period.  How you invest your time is your business.  It all comes down to the level of service you provide your clients.
