What do I know? Seagull, Schmeagull!

I grew up on the Pacific Coast. To me they're Seagulls. Imagine my surprise to see Seagulls in Colorado! I was dumbfounded. How did they get all the way over here? Are they lost? Duh.

From Wikipedia:

"In common usage, members of various gull species are often referred to as sea gulls or seagulls. This name is used by the layman to refer to a common local species or all gulls in general, and has no fixed taxonomic meaning."

(Now I know that there are gulls, and gulls that live near the sea. I feel smart now. So, if you already knew this, don't rub it in. I like feeling smart.)

"Most gulls, particularly Larus species, are ground nesting carnivores, which will take live food or scavenge Ring Billed Gullopportunistically. The live food often includes crabs and small fish. Apart from the kittiwakes, gulls are typically coastal or inland species, rarely venturing far out to sea and into surrounding deciduous forests.

Gulls nest in large, densely packed, and noisy colonies. They lay two to three speckled eggs in nests composedRing Billed Gull of vegetation. The young are precocial, being born with dark mottled down, and mobile from birth.

Gulls—the larger species in particular—are resourceful, inquisitive and highly intelligent birds, demonstrating complex methods of communication and a highly developed social structure; for example, many gull colonies Cape Gulldisplay mobbing behaviour, attacking and harassing would-be predators and other intruders. In addition, certain species (e.g. the Herring Gull) have exhibited tool use behaviour. Many species of gull have learned to coexist successfully with humans and have thrived in human habitats. Others rely on kleptoparasitism (Little thieves, DB) to get their food.Ring Billed Gull

The large species take up to four years to attain full adult plumage, but two years is typical for small gulls. Large White-Headed Gulls are typically long-lived birds, with a maximum age of 49 years (WOW! DB)recorded for the Herring Gull".Herring Gull

These gull photos were shot in San Diego, San Fransisco, and Colorado Springs. Roll your mouse over the photos for species identification.

Hi Debi-Amazingly they are beautiful birds from your photos but they are still a real pain in the butt bird and very loud. We had a ton of them in NY and they would hang out in the parking lots and get in your garbage if you didn't put it in garbage cans. Awesome shots!!!!!

Hi Sharon, I guess with that being the case, you'd have a very different feeling about them than I do! I only see them around here in the lake at the city park! LOL

Mornin Deb:  The Zoo was just OK, much smaller than I would have thought a zoo could be with only 72 acres total.  I haven't looked at the pictures yet, the angles were not conducive with fencing and mesh everywhere.  I love the picture right above, does this gull have a band on it's beak???  See you later :-)

Hey Gail, Sorry your zoo was a bit of a disappointment - Might have gotten some good shots anyway? Hope so!

No band on it's beak, it's a Ring Billed Gull - black 'ring' as in pics 1 & 2 - This one has some kind of food he's carrying.

Posted your 'kitty' for WW! Lots of errands to run today, will catch up with everyone's posts later!

Debi-You had me looking up "precocial". (BTW, AR comment window doesn't have the word) Thanks for the interesting blog. Most of the time I thought the gulls are simply annoying, but you help me see them in a different light...with their own beauty. Great photos. My favorite is the third.

Lydia, Thanks, glad I've been able to find some redemption for these long suffering birds! LOL Precocial - now that we know what it is, will we ever use it? Maybe showing off at a party, huh? Too funny. thanks for taking a look!

As Johnny Carson would say, "I did not know that!", (How's that for dating myself!?) Interesting fact, because I wondered the same.  Lived on the coast once, and when we moved to CO in 1980 and saw the gulls, even when we had snow, I couldn't figure out why they weren't completing their migration. Thanks for clearing that up!  Great shots!

Thanks for the education. Gulls are increasing in number around here, almost to the point of becoming pest.
