Over the past couple of months I have picked up a pair of books on Google SEO.  I do not have my own website (only a company web site)  I do not know HTML.  I am just intrigued by the idea that I can inexpensively compete with other lawyers who do not blog or consider their website as important as I . . . would like to if I knew how!  I am throwing this one out to the masses.  Where does a lawyer with limited web experience begin in order to develop a few web sites that focus on areas of expertise.  I think that I can do it better than my competition.

Does anyone have a how to get started formula?

Thanks AR!

Hi Nyles, you may want to check out www.alamode.com because I know they have free sites for certain professionals in the real estate industry.  I am not sure about sites for attorneys but I would suggest atleast doing a search on attorney prebuilt sites and then attaching your blog to your site.  Good luck!

If you want to create something that will rank well in search engines - and quickly - often times within a day or so, and set you apart from every other lawyer, you might consider doing VIDEO instead of a website.  Do a series of short videos on ONE subject - and optimize those videos for those particular subjects.  You'll find that you will rank high on Google - seriously - in a matter of hours or days.  The more you do, the more saturation you will get.  My guess is that few (if any) of your competitors are doing video - so in addition to good rankings, you will put yourself in an entirely different competitive space than everyone who has a static, boring text laden website.

A la Mode and other template sites look good, but often will NEVER rank - ever.  Especially from that company - their sites are Flash based which is generally not a good strategy for SEO.  Not to mention all of the content is canned and looks exactly the same as everyone else.  You need to stand OUT on the web to be noticed, not blend in.  Video can do that for you.

HI Nyles

I would subscribe to a few bloggers here, Katerina Gassett is a good one.  I would make an "outside blog" here on AR and then post away, you'll get the hang of it.  I, for one, look for all our our real estate partners on AR FIRST and I am sure others do in your area!  keep up the good work!

You are doing something right already since I found your blog by searching for refinance attorneys on the web.  So once you get a site up be sure to put a link to it in every bog post, as well as linking the site to your blog.  I would personally stay away from the canned and prewritten sites - they readily appear that way and do not reflect 'you' at all.  I would check out http://www.homestead.com - they have a simple program (I think other outfits use it also) called Sitebuilder - it allows you to write all your own text, pick out graphic elements etc. all with no HTML knowledge.  I have done my own site (see what you think - http://www,attybegemann.com) and one of the things I like is if I have a spare hour or so I can add something, edit it, etc. very readily.  The hardest part of getting a web site going is what to say, and you are going to have to do that yourself no matter what.  My theory is to work on the site, see what you want to say, get  it up and running, try to make it look pretty and then if  you want to make the investment have a professional redo it with all the graphics and bells and whistles using the text you have already written.  You will need to add the appropriate keywords to the text of the website and also to the description and one other place whose name escapes me that are where the search engines look.  From what I have read, and from my experience, with a routinely updated blog and a well written site you can rank very high in the search engines without paying anybody to do anything except host, which is quite inexpensive.  Good luck - and EVERYBODY needs a website!

Thanks for the tips.  I will check out the sites that you all have mentioned.  I really like the idea of shooting some short video clips and adding them to some sites under each of the specialties that I am trying to promote.  These are some great ideas.  Thanks!
