I thought it might help some of the Apprentices to see where my mind wandered when I first started blogging.

These are the blog posts I wrote prior to writing on both my blog and www.RainCityGuide.com

I didn't talk about me, far as I can tell, so I don't know why new bloggers feel the need to "promote" themselves on their blog.

I didn't stop and think about presentation, though I was playing with color and font size.

Some of the photos I used are no longer "available" and have turned into dreaded red x s.

After having written these entries for God knows what reason, other than to help John Reilly test the blog platform, I started writing on Rain City Guide on 1/13/06 and had my first blogclient on 1/14/06.  Have been blogging and working with blogclients ever since.

So maybe there is something to learn in all that.  It is just Who I Am and What I Chose to Think and Write About.

Ardell - Thanks for sharing. I think beginning to blog is a bit intimidating for most. Finding your voice through the written word is not typical for most of us. We talk or we write, but never both.....and usually not publicly. I am still finding my way around and enjoy learning from the best!

Paula,

Talking and typing are no different for me.  My fingers type what I would say.  That's blogging.  It should give people an idea of how you think.

Thanks Ardell, it doesn't seem to be quite as easy for me. I keep going though and feel I am making Progress.

Thanks so much for the comment on "promoting" oneself.  I feel uncomfortable talking too much about ME.  It just reiterates that people want my knowledge and expertise about my town and real estate issues.  I was beginning to wonder if I was doing something wrong.  I will admit, I'm still looking for my voice.  Thanks for the encouragement.  Sherry

Hi ARDELL,

Thank you so much for sharing this when you have.  I don't think you will ever realize how important or timely this post is for me.   I have been so frustrated lately that I had no idea which way to go or what to do.

The advice from the judges has been nice, but in most cases inconsistent and difficult to utilize.  Write about Real Estate.... don't write about Real Estate... write about yourself.. don't put so much of yourself in the writing... Blogging is about the writing... Whoopie!  Bells and whistles, who care's what it says.

Bugger it!  This post is more valuable to me in terms of what to do and how to do it than all the critiques have been thus far.  Drew is my coach and I value his opinion and his knowledge, but you are my guru, inspiration and ultimately and most importantly my friend.  I made a decision tonight to focus totally on building a business winning blog site and not worry about just a contest winning blog site.

You have just given me and everyone else a blueprint for how to do just that.  Thank you again for everything you have done for me personally and for everyone else.  I don't think you will ever realize how much I appreciate it.  Have a wonderful week.

Take care

Thanks Ardell. There is SO much conflicting advice about "what to do" it's hard to know what to think. If you ask 5 experts, you get 5 different answers.

What you do works, and that's huge.

Mary,

The difference is broad readership vs. addressing the interests of people who are about to buy and sell real estate.

Is you blog "a farming tool" or "a real estate blog"?

Mary & Tisza

I agree with your comments.  In hindsight, there was an upside for me sitting back and watching.  You guys wrote your hearts out.  I don't/didn't have the ability & skill set (or time) to just write and hope it stuck to the wall.

I think the competition is finding it's groove and the apprentices are guiding the judges so that we are not writing to a 'moving target'

Hi Folks,

Mary - You hit the nail square on the head.  What ARDELL does works like a charm and she has the happy clients and the commission checks to prove it.

Kevin - From your lips... to God's ears.

ARDELL, you are so right.  I am learning, and not a moment too soon.  Thanks,

Tisza

Kevin,

In all fairness, I did hold you back from writing until we determined "the focus".  You had plenty to say, I just had to tweak who you were saying it TO.

Wow. Very thought provoking. Perhaps since I'm this far into establishing myself as the neighborhood park expert I might as well apply for a landscaping job. I think I'd better check my rotten attitude and sleep on this. Thanks for all of this detail Ardell.

Put it this way Kelly, how many times have your clients asked you about the things you write about?  The best blog post answers the most asked questions of your real clients.
