Market Update - March 9, 2009

Prices of Treasuries and Mortgage Backed Securities (MBSs) fell sharply (rates up) in early trading this morning. Meanwhile, stock prices advanced.

Last week, the Dow lost almost 700 points. Meanwhile, mortgage backed securities (MBS) prices rose almost a full point (rates fell) as money flowed out of the stock market into fixed income assets. Traders are now turning their attention to the auction of $63 billion in notes and bonds scheduled for later this week. Traders will focus not only on the yields but also the demand for the debt. A drop in demand could lead a drop in bond and MBS prices and an increase in rates.
