When the Going Gets Tough the Tough Go Fishing

The Lucky Catch with Captain Tom, Portland Maine

No, No, No..The Tough Get Back to Basics, right?  Today I attended a seminar titled Get Back to Basics, but my mind wandered to the sign on my husband's fishing boat,  When the Going Gets Tough the Tough Go Fishing.  Same idea, right?  This tough market has a lot of real estate agents whining about how tough it is to make a sale.  I have even found a few here in the rain.

What's the normal turnover rate for real estate agents?  In good years the failure rate is about 70%.  In bad years the failure rate is about 70%. If the failure rate is the same in bad markets as it is in good markets what's the difference?  The difference is successful agents are busy in both good & bad markets and the biggest difference is the type of activity successful agents engage in versus unsuccessful agents.

  • Successful agents prospect for new business every day
  • Successful agents do what makes $$$ first
  • Successful agents have a business plan
  • Successful agents set SMART GOALS
  • Successful agents have positive attitude and it's catchy
  • Successful agents are willing to work harder than unsuccessful agents

Successful agents not only work harder they work smarter.  They are willing to do what it takes to be successful in any market.

Mary - this is a great post about getting back to basics. I really like the one about working smarter, and I cannot agree more.

Hi Mary, Thanks for reminding me to keep on blogging! (I just posted a new blog.)

I believe that these items apply to most businesses, not just realtors. As an inspector I believe that a successful inspector should also prospect for new business, have a business plan, set smart goals, have positive attitude (very important), and be willing to work harder than other inspectors!

Thanks for the encouragement and the reminder to keep on pushing and never give up!

Mary - Excellent observation!  The successful leaders in any market are the ones who continue to work their plan consistently.  Sometimes it is hard to stay focused on the plan however.  Thanks for the reminder. :-)

Yes, the tough do go fishing, for potential clients, leads, and referalls. Good stuff.

Can the tough go surfing too? Great post Mary. Good reminder that building relationships (including via AR) will bring success!

Happy Thursday.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

Sharon--working smarter is hard for most, but so important.

John--glad to see you again.  Yes, these are timely principles for success in any field.

Betty--I guess we all need reminders.  Otherwise we might be perfect which we are not.

Ian--I like the way you put it.  I will make this post into a PP for my next seminar

Marvin--surfing? Why not? Building relationships is so important.

Have a wonderful day or evening.  Mary
