OK, it's an interesting photo but why the title?  I know I'm not seeing something in the picture.

They are beautifully mystifying creatures, aren't they?

Richard - Here you go

Liz - Right on both counts.

Carol - They really are. It is always interesting to watch them, and the other people watching them.

Rich,

Your shots are really quite crisp.  Do you post your photos on Flickr?

Hi richard! I think this guy is cousin to the guy I posted last week! He sure looks familiar! Great shots!

Richard, They are such beautiful animals (sometimes I wonder if they ARE animals in that sense of the word).  They are so intelligent and should be protected.

He looks like a very handsome silverback!  But I'm not sure he would appreciate the crack about knuckle dragging.   LOL

Rebecca - Thanks for the compliment. I post some of them to photobucket but I haven't got into flickr. I am also posting to Rich's Pics, my newest blog (a photo blog) on The Wordless Blog multi user platform.

Debi - LOL!

Carole - Many zoos are trying to protect them and encourage responsible breeding to maintain diverse genetic gene pools while also educating the public on the need to protect them. As caretakers of the planet it is important that we actually provide care and not just take.

Randy - I tried to type the title quietly!

Rich what a powerful reminder of nature. To bad we have to incarcerate them...

Paul - It is sad that they must sometimes be kept in cages. Breeding and reintroduction programs have worked for many creatures, maybe they will work for these as well.

My kids love seeing the Great Apes at our local zoo.  I love to see it when they are given lots of room to roam.

Tom - I love watching them as well. I am much more in favor of the larger, more natural enclosures. I always felt so bad for the big cats, gorillas, and other animals that were kept in those steel and concrete indoor cages when I was a kid.

I'll be taking some of my Clients to the San Diego Zoo in late March or early April. The gorilla playground here is huge, and there are three viewing areas where spectators and gorillas are separated by mere inches and a large sheet of glass. It's so much fun to just watch them playing with each other and grooming themselves. Springtime is particularly neat because there is always at least one little baby in the gang.

What a powerful and amazing creature he is!  I'm sure he would be happier in the wilds but that looks like a pretty nice facility for him which allows all of us to enjoy him!

Russel - That sounds like a lot of fun. I know that is supposed to be one of the premier zoos in the world.

Diane - While I am sure he would be happier in the wild, the zoo animals are often rescued from circuses, people's back yards, and other rather cruel settings. I appreciate the fact that zoos not only put them on display but try to educate the public on habitat loss, violence, and other issues that threaten the natural habitats. I also appreciate the selective breeding programs that the zoos participate in to propagate the different species with as diverse a gene pool as possible.
