My fake plants died because I did not pretend to water them. flowergarden

Mitch Hedberg

I just came across this quote and had to chuckle at myself.  Sometimes, it is funny, that I will do something and think that I am so smart and have fooled the world.  If it wasn't dark outside right now, I would take a picture of my flower boxes.  I have a flower box that runs along the whole front of my house.  Now, I have no green thumb.  Every live plant I have ever tried to own, shrivels up.  I even tried a bamboo plant.  My husband told me not to buy it, but, I had to have it because we bought new bamboo furniture for the guest room and I thought I could handle it.  It only needed to be watered once a week or was it two weeks?  Anyway, yep, I killed it.  The leaves started falling off and well, it was done.

Back to my flower box.  I do not enjoy the dirt under my nails or the smell of earth, so I decided to put some fake flowers in the boxes.  I mean Jo Ann Fabrics has any and every kind of flower and color you could want.  I went to town and bought red, purple and yellow flowers for my box and my husband and I stuck them in the dirt and they were beautiful.  From the end of the driveway...they looked real and I never had to water or fertilize them.  The only job was to change them when the sun faded the colors, no biggie, I could do that.

Well, we had some friends over for dinner.  A "know it all" gardener, who kind of laughed at my flower box.  I couldn't understand what her problem was...they looked just fine to me.  She then proceeded to tell me that "sure, the flowers look nice and colorful, however, those type of flowers don't grow this time of year."  I was like, "What?"   Okay, so there have been other times where I felt I could crawl under the carpet or hide in the closet because of something I had done or said, but, it hit me just then, Not only did she know that about flowers, I bet lots of other people knew that too!  How many neighbors were laughing at me.  And people driving down the road thinking I am crazy.

What else could I do, but, laugh at myself....which I am getting used to doing more and more, but hey, there's got to be a few driver by's that point to their spouse and exclaim "Wow, honey, look at those beautiful flowers.  Let's do that at our house."

And, my hands are nice and smooth with no dirt under my well manicured nails.

I have also learned to go on the internet and find out which flowers grow at which times.....I'll show her!

Tina that is funny! I'm glad that you were able to take it in stride. I also must say that I am amazed that the bamboo plant died. We had some in our old backyard that the previous owners planted. We couldn't even kill it! We dug up BAGS of roots, tried blackberry bush killer and many other types. I literally INJECTED some of the shoots with the killer and it wouldn't kill the stuff. The garden book at Lowe's said the only way to keep it where you want it is to dig 18 inches down and fill it with concrete! That stuff is brutal! I guess if it were in a pot like yours was, lack of water would do the trick!

That's funny!  But you know what....you're just different....they DO 'grow' at your house any time of the year.

Very funny post.  I think I'd just leave my fake flowers as they are... eventually it will be their "season" again.

Tina--I know you did the internet, but maybe you should just hire a gardener who knows what flowers to pickup at Jo Ann's in case you forget to check the calendar for your next season! ;- )

Laughing at one's self is the highest form of self confidence.  Just keep up the things that make you happy, and don't worry about distractors.

Tina, I have fake flowers in the pots by my front door. I don't care if they are in season or not, just that they look pretty :-)
