Prudential Woodmont Realty Group has joined the Earth Hour Movement by signing up to be a part of Earth Hour Saturday March 28, 2009

For years now I have been trying to get the owners of my company, Prudential Woodmont Realty Group, to start being more Eco-Conscious!

They agreed to recycle the hundreds of tin cans used weekly by the agents, staff and guests to our office. As part of our Charity Group, we also kept the Ronald McDonald House on top of the recycling bin so that those inclined could remove the tabs and put them in the house. The Ronald McDonald Houses collect them and recycle them. The money they make goes to help pay for the houses. But that's another blog.

For the past few years I have been working with the clerical staff to get them to recycle the pounds of paper that is tossed each week. They've put a tall container in the copy room so that people can throw their misprints, bad copies etc into it. But alas, it's too complicated for my fellow Realtors.

So each week, I load up my trunk with boxes of old Homes Magazines, Newspapers, and various other paper and head to Granbery Elementary School. There I find Sherry, who has tirelessly been every Saturday, rain or shine, to set an example to the elementary students. Sherry began the recycling program at Granbery Elemenary in 1986. Read more about it here. Like I said rain or shine she's there. Today, in the downpour, was no exception. The kids volunteer by helping unload the trunks of those who bring their recycling. It was great this morning as they took box after box of paper from my car.

Now for the great news. On Thursday of this week I walked into the office of my broker with an article about Earth Hour. It listed all of the companies in Middle Tennessee who were participating in this event. With a simple nod of the head she agreed to let Prudential Woodmont participate.

I quickly took the information to the receptionist who has agreed to help me get this ball rolling. We have postcards to design to send to my farm area, blogs to write and other agents to enlist.

Earth Hour set for 8pm Saturday, March 28th 2009

This will be the first year that Nashville will participate along with 680 cities and 77 countries to turn off their lights, water heaters, unplug computers and appliances and lower heat so that it doesn’t come on for one hour beginning at 8:30 pm.

IF all of Nashville participated it would save enough electricity to power 1230 homes for one month.

Organized by World Wildlife Fund, the worlds largest multinational conservation organization, Earth Hours is to bring awareness to the public about energy conservation and global warming. Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sidney, Australia. Leslie Aun, WWF’s managing director of Earth Hour. An estimated 36 million people participated last year. Last years cities included Atlanta, Chicago, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Miami, London, Paris and Rome.

Chicago participated last year when 2.7 million customers turned off their lights for 1 hour.  The electric company said that the savings for just one hour was 7 percent or an equivalent of taking 7 million cars off the road for an hour.
