Rudy's BBQ in Denton

Last August I took a listing in Aubrey, Texas.  It was a cute Short Sale listing and when I posted it on Active rain, I commented to my friend Karen Otto that one of my favorite things about driving to Aubrey to take the listing was that I got to stop in Frisco at the Rudy’s BBQ there.  Well, last week I took a new short sale listing in Krum, Texas and just a few short miles from Krum is Denton, home of another Rudy’s!  Don’t think that I didn’t stop… because Rudy’s BBQ is THAT good!

Rudy’s is a cafeteria style BBQ place.  They serve all the traditional smoked meats (brisket, turkey, sausage, chicken, and more) as well as lots of side items.  The seating is long communal tables with metal folding chairs, and the BBQ is my absolute favorite.  I am a brisket lover, so that is always my choice.  I order a half pound of brisket (extra lean), usually with 2 small sides (this time is was the BBQ beans and the creamed corn).  With your meat, you have a choice of white or wheat bread.  Take it to the table and go to town on it.  YUM!  Rudy’s always cooks their meat just right, tender, not dry, and flavorful.  Their BBQ sauce is phenomenal… just the perfect blend of spice and flavor.  And their sides are all great.  The creamed corn is a MUST TRY item.  I also like their potato salad a lot too.

I would comment on the desserts, but I am always far to full to try it!  LOL!

Anyhow, Rudy’s is a must try for any BBQ lover.  In addition to Frisco and Denton, you can also find in 13 other locations in Texas, as well as Norman, Oklahoma and Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Steve:  I just might have to go and sample their fine cuisine one of these days.  Just where is the location in Frisco ?  And... thanks for the great review.

I don't think we were a BBQ city back when you were here... I wonder what Texas BBQ is like, how it is different than Carolina BBQ or KC BBQ. We've got lots of BBQ now.

When Blog Tour USA went cross country in 2007 I remember people from BBQ country trying to entice them.. after our official Columbus OH weenie roast we went to a bar...and ate pizza which scared me (NYC guys eating Columbus OH pizza.) The Sellsius guys said they don't "get"  BBQ.

Are you originally from TX?

Hi Steve,

BBQ is one thing we don't have much of here in CA. Hmmm...I'm going to be in Dallas next month. Maybe I should make the drive and check it out.  : )

Hi Steve, I didn't know Rudy's was in Dallas.  I think they started out here in San Antonio at their Leon Springs location.  We love Rudy's.

Hi Steve—I discovered you from one of your comments on Karen's blog, from Ft. Worth, this morning. When I saw your photo of Rudy's knew I had to read it. I love Rudy's BBQ. My first experience with them was in New Braunfels, TX. Then they finally built one just north of Universal City which was closer for me. There isn't anything on the menu I don't like, but I never have gotten to the dessert either - LOL! I need to go to Denton this weekend for a Rudy's Fix. Thanks for a tasty post... it's a real treat!

I thought Rudy's started in Austin? I had never been until about 6 years ago when I went to Austin with Mike for the first time to meet his family.  We've stopped at the one in Waco before and it was AWFUL!!  They're not all treated equally!

I'm a Rudy's fan now too - had the pleasure of eating at the one in Frisco - love the creamed corn!

Hi Steve. Rudy's is very good. As you know, I have spent a great deal of time in the Little Elm area over the last several months and Rudy's is a place that I have stopped through, on occassion. It is always good! My particular favorite is the smoked sausage.

Another favorite stop of mine, not too far from Rudy's, just off Main St., is Babe's Fried Chicken. You know, I love me some good ole' fried chicken, and Babe's serves it right, with the homemade biscuits, green beans, cream corn, and mashed potatoes. Love it, Love it, Love it !!!

Boy, I love to eat!! Can you tell?

Steve,

Rudy's is okay but I love the vintage car in your picture.  Is it yours?

We have one very near my house in San Antonio...their BBQ sauce is awesome!  We usually bring home a bottle every time we go!  You are so right about the cream corn, not usually a fan of the canned version, but Rudy's is fabulous!

You are so right about Rudy's, I have actually forced myself to the desert a few times and the Banana Pudding is great as well. The prices are rather reasonable as well!

If you like Rudy's, you HAVE to try Babe's.  It is a little different idea/style, but if you are ever up this way again, you've got to head to the old town square of Sanger or Roanoke and give Babe's a try.  Seriously, it's worth making the drive!  It's great family dining and a local family business, which I like to support.
