Do you get trapped into language shifts? It is funny how the evolution of the English language eventually catches up to us all.

I have always enjoyed the role that slang plays in our daily communication. Yet there have been times that I have resisted, nay, dare I say rallied against a particular word or phrase.

Take for instance the now very common phrase " No Problem ". I hated this one from the start and truth be known I still don't care for it. To state " No Problem " presumes that I have given the impression that there was a problem in the first place when most likely there was No Problem at all.

Then there is " Cool " as in " That's Cool or He or She's Cool. This one word is interesting to me. Made popular in the 60's completely disappeared off the radar until the 80's when it began to make its way back on to the scene. I remember the first time my children heard me say " That's Cool ". It kind of shocked them and impressed them at the same time. I smiled inside remembering how common the phrase was when I was a teenager.

Try as we may it is hard to resist these changes. For one of the very things that we all crave is to be accepted socially. Slang words are the avenue towards acceptance. Even the dreaded " No Problem " which I can not stop from using no matter how hard I try.

As long as you don't start saying "Whatever!"  That's the one that makes me crazy!  Makes me want to say "talk to the hand".

Too funny! I pepper my speech with plenty of phrases like these but I'm slow to adopt new ones.  "It's so fly" won't be coming out of my mouth any time soon - if ever - and I was flummoxed five or six years ago when an agent described her clients as "chill".  But none of these get to me like words used incorrectly - that list of pet peeves is very long - with "very unique" near the top of the list nowadays.

It is funny. I do like slang. Even when I lived in Japan I found slang words fascinating. Travelling throughout the country I would go out of my way to discover slang words that I could use.

The Japanese people were amazed at my ability to adapt slang from one area to another. In fact I remember the three day lay over I had in Tokyo before leaving the country. A small restaurant where I too lunch those three days began seeing a crowd daily as I arrived. I was told on the day I left that they were there to listen to my Southern accent. ( I had lived in Southern Japan )

Herb,

We must be from the same era, "cool" and "No Problem" are ones that just slip off my tongue without me thinking.

I'm glad "groovy' was before my time and "that's sick" or "bad"(for good) came much, much later.

I had forgotten all about " Groovy " James.

I was a fan of the cult classic Strange Brew and the Mekenzie Bros saying. " Take off Eay. You Hoser " Still makes me smile.
