The Place You Love is Gone!

Was going through my old copies of Preservation, the magazine published by the National Historic Trust, today - I am trying like crazy to get through the stacks of magazines I've been waiting for a chance to read!  and I came across the July/August 2008 issue.  There is a review of the book referenced in the title above by Melissa Holbrook Pierson, which was written by Dwight Young.

Pierson describes 'progess' and what it means, about losing the scenes of childhood to a form of modernzation she describes as a pulverization into unrecognizability by examining three places she lived.  Young, the reviewer says the book is not just an exercise of nostalgia but also a refreshing and right outrage.

Since I love seeing the places I've known in my past, and share with Young the sense of miracle that comes with finding a childhood haunt unaltered by time I find I want to document what still exists.

I'll be taking more photographs on my journeys through time. I'll write more about what I find, or don't find.

I've just ordered the book from Amazon.  I'll let you know what I think.

I think it is so important to make sure you take many pictures, especially of your family. They will make for good conversation one day and give that warm fuzzy feeling to those involved.

Well that certainly made me think.  Just off the top of my head there are a dozen or so things I can think of that are no longer there.  The tennis courts and play ground I played on as a kid are now MIA.  My little  town has experienced a lot of growth, but some treasures have been lost as well.

Hi Alexsandra ~ Thanks for the great tip - that book is right up my alley. I've just added it to my wishlist on Amazon (that's the easy way I track all the books I want to buy - it's a long list!).  It's so true - development nibble and nibbles away at the landscape until little is left. Excuses are made as each building is torn down until eventually few if any older places are left.

I dream of buying back all the houses I've lived in - and redecorating them just the way they were.

David -- so true! It is wonderful to have pictures of family

Michael --I'm looking forward to it, think it will be an interesting trek.

Tammy -- I think that is exactly her point!  that treasures are lost in some of the progress.  I'm looking forward to her views.

Liz -- what a great dream!  Wouldn't it be fun though?  In how many houses have you lived?  Would it be a lifetime to get them redecorated? Love the Amazon wish list --saves me coming across little bits of paper with book titles in odd places.

Hi Alexsandra ~ I've lost track of how many houses I've lived in since as an adult I rented in the city for ages before I bought.  As far as the "Liz Bolton Lived Here" recreations I would probably settle for the two homes of my childhood, the house my dad grew up in (that would be have to be an adjunct to the theme) , and the first house I owned.  Funny - it's a fantasy of long standing and over the years as any piece of furniture or accessory from my childhood was sold or given away there would a small voice in my ear saying "But we need that to recreate the house on X Street".

Liz - What an interesting inner voice! And wonderful that you have been able to hear it over the years.  I think that in itself might make an interesting piece of writing! I'd read it.
