This morning while driving home from the gym I had my car radio tuned to CBS News.  The commentator reported on a new phenomenon in Oakland CA. 

Commuters were now standing at curbsides waiting to be picked up by drivers who needed more riders to qualify for the HOV lanes on the Bay Bridge.  It is considered a win-win for all concerned

  • Free transportation for the commuter at the curbside
  • HOV accessiblity for the driver reducing commuting time and expense

Californians, our parents brought us up to believe "trends" start in your state and travel eastward.  This is one of those times when that theory is wrong.

The Commonwealth of Virginia got its' first HOV lanes on I-95 in Northern Virginia in 1971.  It became almost instantly apparent there was a need for "casual carpooling".  Thus was born our internationally acclaimed SLUG LINES

According to the slug line website bus drivers are trained to detect counterfeit coins (slugs) being dropped in the toll collecting machines.  They now had to differentiate between bus passengers and carpoolers (slugs).
