HUD Website Fraud Alert

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Chervenic Realty

My local MLS sent me the following alert:

FRAUD ALERT - The Summit County Consumer Affairs Office sent out the following fraud alert: There is a deceptive website posing as HUD. This website is deliberately deceiving by public by using the HUD name in the web address as well as on the website. The website tries to dupe people into giving out personal information (known as "phishing") - and because they've made their site appear to be an "official U.S. Government website", some people may fall prey to this scam. The website is:  http://bailout.hud-gov.us/

The key on that web site address is that it ends in ".us"

That indicates that it is a foreign web site even though some people will mistake the "us" for meaning United States. So it would be unusual for a U.S. government site to be located in a foreign country.

If there's any question about a web site, especially a government web site, call them rather than clicking on a link.
