Do You Want A Fast Food Or A Fine Dining Experience?

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

There are definitely at least two distinct business models in the market for buying or selling a house. I relate these to eating food. It all comes down to service. What are you in the mood for and what are you willing to pay for getting that service? There is a difference.

Messy Kid  Do You Want A Fast Food or A Fine Dining Experience?

With fast food you are on the run. Cheap is everything. In and out. Just give me my food. Nothing fancy to sit down to. Lots of noise. Nothing to write home about. The food is tolerated at best.

With fine dining, it is all about the "experience." This one will be a good one. You want to be treated right. You are special. Linen table cloths. Dim lighting. Soft background music. A waiter or waitress serving you hand and foot. You are special.

Fast food in real estate is the cheap alternative to getting things done. For Sale By Owners. Limited service agencies. You may have to do your own contracts. Your own sign. Limited agencies may help you with uploading your photos on to a common web site. You Mr. or Ms. Customer are another number. There is a place for fast food. But you are not special.

Fine dining is an agent or team whom will take care of you. It will be a good experience. Understanding your needs. Virtual tours, Internet savviness, expert in their field of specialty, well educated, knows their local market, returns your calls, answers all your questions, a ton of resources from inspectors, lenders, appraisers, to Stagers and Painters.  They may end up being a good friend of yours after closing.

Is there a place for fast food? Yes. Is there a difference in price with the fine dining? Absolutely. But sometimes you don't want to leave your greatest investment in the hands of someone wearing paper hats and giving you your food in a wax paper wrap.

Enjoying the fine dining experience you so richly deserve helps in life to keep things from getting messy.

Hi Gary, this blog sure makes one hungry and it's written so deliciously... mmm mmm good!  Identifying the business with the way we eat sure hits home though.

hey Gary, It's rare, truly rare (2x annually at most) that I will go through a drivethrough and buy fastfood---and then it's only the kids meal---cuz ya get a toy to give away! I used to live for dinner parties and "themed" gatherings with friends...I do love the presentation side of things...must be the Libra in me... no matter what, we're setting the table and lighting candles... it's the simple MAGIC of the moments that bring a blessing to the table in the wilderness... great analogy here---and great-looking shpaghetti! xox

This is a fantastic post, Gary. The analogy is probably the best I've seen. Wish every consumer out there would see it.

Hi Gary-Very good post my friend. Love the analogy. Reminds me of the saying YOU get what you pay for. Who would want to settle for less than the best if you don't have to especially when you are purchasing a home which is one of your biggest purchase you will ever make.  Nobody that had a great understanding of what a realtor truly does for you.  Have a great night. :-)

Hi Gary, This is a great post and love the concept.   The fast food of real estate should not be considered for one of the largest personal investments of a life time.  You deserve the truly fine dining experience for those investments.

And both are valid choices, but one is always preferable over the other!

Gary - First of all, this made me think about when my children were small and I had the urge to get out the photos that are similar to this one.

Great tips, I love to provide this type of service and in the process I continue to add past clients to my friend list.

Hi Gary, We took our grandchildren to a very nice restaurant last month. Our four year old granddaughter was so taken by "such a beautiful room", my six year grandson just wanted to know "Why they were taking so long!!"  HAHA!

In Real Estate, my clients are special - I vote for fine dining!

Hello Gary,
You never cease to amaze me with your analgies--this is a terrific one.  I always, always choose fine dining over fast food---I like to be "taken care of" and that's what I do for my clients.

I like your analogy, you always get what you pay for, cheap things aren't good and good things aren't cheap, this very well applies to staging also.

Gary, I know everyone has said this, but it's true.  Great analogy!  No wax paper or paper hats here.  Since most buyers don't have to pay the Buyer's agent anyway, you would think they would insist on first class service, but that is not always the case.  I suppose they don't know any better.

I hope you have a great St. Patrick's day!

I seriously love fine dining! I do this at home most everyday. I take time to make a meal, use the good china and silver and savor each bite. People need to use their good stuff everyday. It could be your last and it went to waste. I do the same for my my clients.

Gary - I guess that is why i am not so tolerant of the market these days - I prefer to give the finer service.

Hey Gary, great analogy...but here is another alternative; going to a fine dining establishment that is over-priced, with marginal food and bad service.  These are like REALTORS that are charging full price but aren't doing the things that matter most when selling a home, like putting the best photographs possible online (they send their assistant with a crappy P&S camera to take the shots), or having a cluttered home undergo a Staging consultation, or losing interest if the home has no offers after like 45-60 days.

Sellers are wising up, there is a lot of information online regarding the best and most effective ways of getting your home sold.  As these potential clients start looking at agents to list their homes, they'll start looking at the photographs portrayed by the agents and ask themselves, "do I want my home to look like that when they list it?" If the homes look bad, and are photographed poorly, savvy sellers particularly in higher-dollar homes are going to look elsewhere if you aren't presenting the best product.

I sometimes wonder if REALTORS view Stagers and Photographers in an adversarial way because it involves an investment on the agent's part, as opposed to looking at these related professionals as valuable team members that will only enhance their "product" and help sell their homes faster and generate even more listings for them.

After waiting in line to buy coffee at McDonalds, I decided it was worth going to Starbucks and getting it right away.  You get what you pay for, in more ways than one.

By the way, I love your blog titles.  You are always so creative with your posts and always so informative.  When I find myself struggling with a title for a post, I'm often thinking of you as you make it look so easy.  I know it isn't easy and I applaud you for having created some of the very best.
