Do street names effect property value?

Do street signs effect property value?

A Canadian Study suggests that a poorly named street creates a negative view in the minds of buyers.

The Eastern Connecticut area has a number of street names that fall into the "What were they thinking?" catagory.

I've written in the past about Hell Hollow Road in Voluntown. But how about, Number Two Pond Road in Colchester? Do you need to get permission from your teacher to go there? BMW Drive in Griswold always sounded a bit elitist to me compared to Pigeon Swamp Road in Lebanon. Then there are the names that are impossible to spell, let alone pronounce, like Susquetonscut Brook Road in Bozrah. I do like Lovers Lane in East Lyme though, and don't think that one would drive buyers away!

Last year, Mitsubishi Motors held a contest of funny street names. Entries had to include the actual photo of the street sign.. The first place winner was Pyscho Path. Second place went to Divorce Court.

Ok, so now I'll fess up. My office, RE/MAX Realty Group, is on Hurlbutt Road in Gales Ferry, CT. Yes, I hear the snickers when I have to give out my company address to anyone. You can visit my office HERE

Do you have funny street names in your area?

In the central Pennsylvania area, we've got quite a few:

Three Square Hollow Road outside of Carlisle

Bullfrog Valley Road here in Hershey

Here in Lebanon County we have a town called Ono.

And also in Lebanon County there is an AWOL Road outside of Fort Indiantown Gap

I have a friend in Louisville who used to live on Memory Lane, I really liked that one.  We have names like Cow Creek and Chicken Farm around here!  My Uncle lives out Scary Creek, which is really very pretty.

I love the name "Cow Creek" ... these are all so funny.  A good way to start the day with a chuckle.  Now I'll be on the lookout for odd street names in and around my city.

I grew up living on the corner of Hooker St. and Apple Blossom Ln. Whenever I had to give my address (which was on Apple Blossom) people would say, "Ohhhh what a pretty name!" And then I'd tell them, "Yeah, and the cross street is Hooker!"

I had a client that loved a house, but did not want to live in a subdivision called "Blackwater Creek".  So guess what...she bought down the road.

My favorite street in this area is "Memory Lane"...

How about Swamp College Road in Prince Edward County, Ontario. I haven't seen the swamp or the college.

During my second tour in Viet Nam Carol and the children moved into a home we had purchased in Cornwall, New York.

They lived on Payton Road (not to be confused with Payton Place which became very popular in a book of the same name).  Just think, an attractive gal living all by herself with a brood of 5 little ones!

Think we took much flack from that?

Often the street name will affect the showings on a property - on a busy street? no, let's not look at that one. I've had owners who own property on a corner lot petition the city to have the address changed to the perpendicular street, either after they bought the property or before they put it on the market. It CAN make a big difference.

What a fun post! We have an "Easy Street" here in Edmond that I always find amusing. There's also a street near my lakehouse called "Lotawatah Road." People get a kick out of that one. I'll have to come back and add more later as I know there are more, I'm just blanking right now becaust I can't get the "Number two pond road" out of my mind.

Linda.... sorry that I am late to the party. How did I miss this one?  In any case....  I can't think of any off hand, but I sure some streets make buyers think twice. Just as those houses that are on busy streets, that are hard to sell.

That is awesome!  We don't have funny street names, but we have a fishing store named:

Master  They sell bumper stickers that read "you can't beat our bait".

I agreed that it did affect the value before i looked at the Canadian study. :)  why would people want to name these streets like that? are they underpaid and disgruntled employee of the city planning? help me over here. why couldn't they all rock and be cool. or some be elegant. but boogertown? that one over from funkytown right? ;)    later gators

ps. Chris, you would have a pic of that!!

More Connecticut Names - 'Skunk Misery Lane" in Haddam and "Roast Meat Hill Road" in Killingworth - this one got its name back in the 1800's when an ox cart full of hay was struck by lightning in a thunderstorm and the cart and the oxen went up in flames LOL

I lived in North Carolina where there was a street named Ten Ten Road.  Why didn't they just call it Twenty?
