Most often those in the housing industry must watch they don't discriminate with any clients that are handicapped so to speak, or physically challenged. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 or ADA mandates certain items in construction for buildings to assist this category of people helping out with rails, ramps, and such. But sometimes you can

Deaf and Blind      Go Far In Life By Just Being Deaf and Blind.

I laugh often at those team builders that always remind me, a march to my own drummer kind of lad, that there is no I in "TEAM." Team has its place for many things in life but I always tell them that you will find the I in "INDIVIDUAL."

I am a big fan of the individual and you being YOU and bringing to bear all that YOU uniquely represent in the world. If you are blind to things that get you off track and deaf to words from others that discourage you from your quest, you are motoring along your way to what YOU want to accomplish and give to the world. The Wright Brothers, got their airplane to fly as inventors cause they didn't listen or look at all the naysayers around them and kept experimenting till they got that bird up in the air.

Think about the "good" aspects of being deaf and blind as you work to accomplish your mission or missions in life. In the end you will be much farther ahead with this approach.

All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence; then success is sure.  Mark Twain

Gary as always very thought provoking.  I am the mom of two deaf kids and gathered several meanings from this post.  Very interesting..

A team is certainly made up of many individuals.

Those of us who are fortunate to not have the challenge of handicaps often overlook what is a huge obstacle to others.  After my father lost his sight I became much more aware of the daily tasks that present issues to the blind.  It also gave me a huge admiration how one has to accept the plate that was dealt and learn to adapt.  Thanks for your post!

Gary--One of the most difficult things to teach my kids is to not listen to those who tell them it can't be done or they are doing things wrong. It is important not to look at how others do things. Sometimes you are right and they are all wrong...If you only trust your abilities. Good post!

Hello Gary-Thought provoking as always. I'm one of those folks that marches to the beat of their own drum. While I am the kind of a person that can work as part of a team in certain circunstances. I work best independently and I hope that what I bring to a friends life is my way of giving something unique to this world. It may not be grand or spectacular but it always comes from the heart.  if you have a health challenge or a physical disability you look at the world from a different perspective than a healthy individual. I have a young friend who has cerebral palsy and I learned more from than young inspirational woman than I have from most able bodied folks. Having health challenges myself you do learn to adapt as anyone with different challenges do. But you focus on what you can do not what you can't do as a friend of mine told me. Where there is a will there is a way. Great post. :-)

Gary,

When my kids were growing up, I ALWAYS told them that there is no such word as "can't".  Now they are succeeding in their lives.  I abide by the same.

Thanks for sharing and great post!

Gary, are you sure you are a realtor and not a life coach, personal motivator? You are good!

Thank you.

Gary, "I am a big fan of the individual and you being YOU and bringing to bear all that YOU uniquely represent in the world."  This speaks volumes about you.    Be yourself, not who you think someone else wants you to be. You said it beautifully.

Gary, I had to read your headline twice but of course when I read the post it makes so much SENSE.  You DO have to follow your own heart and thoughts and not listen to others who may try to put you down.  Great eye-opener for those who worry about "what other people think."

Vanessa: Thanks for your comment. As a mother of the two deaf children you know the challenges they face every day. But they have strengths with their deafness by tuning in with other senses and not hearing all the negativity in the world as much as the rest of us.

Tom: Good point that an individual's strength can add to the team like leadership skills.

Connie: Seeing the world through the way another reacts to being blind has to be eye opening not only for the adaption but also the lessons learned about acceptance.

Fran: I'm confidently ignorant more times than I like to admit.

Terri: Trusting in your own abilities is a HUGE factor you are right.

Sharon: Good point, do the best with what you have. Sometimes those with handicaps are far ahead of the able bodied ones which I have seen too.

Mike: Mark Twain has many good quotes.

Brigita: Excellent thought. Banish thought from the vocabulary.

Andrea: I wear many hats for sure. Sometime mountain climber, Yoga student, piano player, life with me is never boring.

Mandi: Yes, if we don't get in our own way we can go far.

Sandy: Being you is my theme song LOL. (I gotta be me??)

Gary,

I too have always marched to a different drum...in high school if everyone was wearing jeans I would always wear a dress...and vice versa...nothing has really changed. Tried the team approach and there is certainly a place for it, but ultimately you have to maintain who YOU are...and what YOU believe to be the best course for YOUR business...

Another gem. So true. As I've said in previous comments, this is something I continue to work on and am getting better at. White it does take practice -- lots of it -- you are right on when you say:

"Think about the "good" aspects of being deaf and blind as you work to accomplish your mission or missions in life. In the end you will be much farther ahead with this approach."

Thank you for sharing even more of your wisdom.

What a thought-provoking post AND comments...it always seems that the more I learn, the more I realize how much I really don't know...Listening is key...and then looking within our hearts can follow. And it's amazing what the exercise of listening can do for a team's success.

Gary:  A new approach to fair housing..deaf and blind.  I've got the blind part down.  Just take off my glasses and even my own face in the mirror vanishes.  :)

Gary, I'm with Fran.  I have always been ignorantly confident in every endeavour.  Most information after the first three sentences is superfluous.  And my confidence is always ignorant for the same reason.  Loved it   But twere is not for fools, nothing would be accomplished, Right>

Gary - This reminds me of when I was in training as a new real estate agent and other agents kept asking me what firm I had transferred in from.  I was a brand new agent, but I was adamant that I wasn't going to look or act like one!  I refused to let my firm put my picture in the paper as a new agent.  Why go through the timid, nervous, new agent stage?  I just wanted to fast forward to the productive, experience agent stage.  Another good point is that experience isn't just time going by.  It's what happens during that time and what you learn from it.  I'd like to see a post from you on that topic.

Gary - There's a time for TEAM and a time for INDIVIDUAL.  I think YOU can be part of a TEAM while remaining true to your INDIVIDUAL self.  If you're blind, your sense of hearing is better, thus allowing you to truly listen to your client.  If you're deaf, your sense of sight is better, thus allowing you to see what your client truly wants.
