The Palos Verdes unified School District Board has voted to place a proposal for a new parcel tax of $165 per parcel on the ballot in June. This tax would be in addition to an existing school parcel tax of $$209 per parcel. The new tax is intended to raise approx. $3 million to offset some of the reductions in state funding expected of about $6 million.
I believe that it is important that Peninsula voters approve of this new tax as it is a small price to pay to keep our schools as one of the top school districts in the state. From a real estate standpoint, the quality of our local schools has a very significant effect on our property values. I have had many buyers specifically choose to buy on the Palos Verdes Peninsula becasue of the quality of the public schools. These buyers recognize that if they were in the Los Angeles school district, that they would probably have to pay thousands of dollars in tuition for private schools, and that by buying in Palos Verdes, that they can instead put that money into a home payment.
