About the Austin Energy Efficiency Ordinance. In Austin, we love our city and green is a popular concept here. The new energy efficiency ordinance is intended to move Austin along the path of GREEN as a whole community. Keep in mind that this does not apply to those of us living in Round Rock, Pflugerville or Kyle. Just Austin residents.
Effective date is June 1, 2009.
Under the new ordinance, home sellers will be required to obtain an energy audit and disclose those findings in the required seller's disclosure.
This ordinance applies to homeowners in the Austin city limits and those serviced by Austin Energy for electricity.
Energy audits must be conducted by certified Residential Energy Services Network or Building Professional Institute professionals registered with Austin Energy.
As energy ausdit findings must be included in the seller's disclosure, these audits should be conducted prior to placing your home on the market for sale.
Under the current ordinance rule, an audit will be good for 10 years. As a homeowner, you may want to conduct an audit so that you can make your home more energy efficient and take advantage of the saving yourself while you are living there.
Exemptions to the energy efficiency ordinance include foreclosure or per-foreclosure properties, properties subject to eminent domain, transactions betwen family members, those under court order, in probate, under decree of legal separation, less than 10 years old, manufactured homes, and participants in Austin Energy Electric Utility programs.
