One of the major issues looming in the city of Omaha is an unfunded Federal Mandate to requiring the separation of rain runoff  and sewer waste.  In the older parts of the city of Omaha, the rain water and sewer waste is combined into one sewer system.  This combined sewer system results in raw sewage being dumped into the Missouri River during a heavy rain.

The EPA has mandated that the city has until the year 2024 to correct this issue and reduce the amount of sewage in the Missouri River.  What does this mean for homeowners in the city of Omaha?  This unfunded mandate means the citizens of Omaha have to pay for it.  The cost for this project is estimated at $1.5 billion dollars.  This cost would be passed on to homeowners in a "sewer user fee" which could mean an extra $600 per year per $100,000 of property value.

Ouch!  Maybe they could do some fund raising of some kind.  Maybe have bake sale, yard sale, cut back on spending, how about sell raffle tickets for 1 year free pass of property tax.  All the things everyone else has to do to cover unexpected costs in life.

Considering the updates have been long in coming and have been know to the City Council since the late 80's, I'm surprised that the people of Omaha have not been screaming about the situation a lot sooner. Again, I forget that this only became a serious undertaking when it dealt with the new convention center and possible new ballpark. Otherwise it will require research costing almost as much as the project itself. What are the City Fathers looking out for?

The City of Omaha knew that this project had to be accomplished yet sat back and waited so that a 1.5 million dollar walking bridge could be built.  We could have used that funding to get the project underway to ensure that this fair city could continue to receive Federal Funding for upcoming projects.

What kind of wake-up call does this city need before everything comes to a screeching halt!  Does the new Mayoral race have to make this one of their 'soap box' stands to get the votes needed to gain their election?
