Compact Fluorescent Bulbs - Handle and Dispose with Care

I have previously blogged about the benefits to the environment and cost savings of using compact fluorescent bulbs in our homes for lighting in place of incandescent bulbs.  However, we must be aware of the risks associated with the small amounts of mercury contained in these new bulbs.

An excellent column written by Glenn Haege: the handyman, appeared in the Detroit News recently regarding the subject.  This is a must read for all, along with the EPA's recommendations on how to dispose of compact fluorescent bulgs, and how to clean up broken bulbs.

Stefan,  Thanks for the additional information. The local H.S. was shut down and 1600 pairs of shoes inspected because someone threw a thermometer near the cafeteria. I can't believe that poor womans plight. I'm sure there will be repercussions to the CFL industry.

Stefan:

Appreciate this information. I was talking with staff at the Western North Carolina Green Building Council about CFL's and their potential hazard and they did not seem to concerned. I will be forwarding them this information.

You are very welcome, Stephanie.  This is information which we should be aware of.  As the CF bulbs proliferate, they will need to be handled and disposed of properly.
