Wiring Books Recall

Presented by D.J. Skelding

Beware of a couple of wiring books that are being recalled by the CPSC due to faulty instructions. They're both How-to-Books put out by The Taunton Press.  They were both sold at home improvement stores, book stores, and various other retailers nationwide from February 2008 through November 2008 for about $25.

Name of Products: Wiring a House, 3rd Edition and Wiring Complete, Expert Advice from Start to Finish Instructional Books .

Wiring A House

Wiring Complete

Wiring a House is Rex Cauldwell's latest edition on wiring, and is both a master electrician as well as a master plumber. He also inspects homes and teaches courses and acts as a master witness for legal testimony.

Since I highly respect  all of Mr. Cauldwells previous works I can't help but wonder if this is a technical editor oversite or if the author signs off on everything before it goes to press?

I'm glad to of, so far, not heard of anyone that has been injured as a result of the erroneous (wiring) diagrams and at the same time it sure would be nice if there was better Quality Control on materials that are distributed to the public that can actually kill someone.

Could have been a problem for a do it yourself-er...like me! I look at the pictures more than the text!

Lots of people have posted about the issues with these two books but no one lets anyone in on what the defects in the books actually are----that would be helpful:)

In the Wiring A House book by Rex Cauldwell the problems are located on page 188.  The wording in the paragraphs are correct, however the error(s) are in the diagrams.

On the left hand diagram, titled "Wiring a GFCI receptacle with both protected and unprotected cables" the errors are as follows:

1.  On the Upper wire labled "To unprotected receptacles downstream" It should read "To protected receptacles downstream"

2.  On the Lower wire labled "To protected receptacles downstream" It should instead read "To unprotected receptacles downstream"

3.  The wire that's labled Ground should instead be labled Neutral.

Electrical wiring errors

On the right hand diagram, titled "Wiring a single GFCI receptacle" the errors are as follows:

1.  The wire that's labled Ground should instead be labled Neutral

2.  The wire that's labled Neutral should instead be labled Ground

Hope this helps just incase you own the book and want to be safe.

DJ---cool.  Those are indeed some significant errors.  Since most of the books have been pulled from the shelves I have just never been able to see what the defects actually are.  Thanks for posting this.

Best that the books were recalled, the error can be corrected, but this could be deadly for DIY's.  I have just started reading some of Rex Cauldwells writing online, and I have already learned a few things I did not know, and I like his style of writing.  I will probably be buying his materials in the not to distant future.
