I know alot of people have already explained this but I still get daily questions on this new topic.

All First Time Homebuyers who purchase a home in 2009 are eligible for the $8,000 First Time Homebuyer Credit.

Qualifications:

A First Time Homebuyer is defined as you or your spouse have not owned a primary residence in 3 years. 

You are a US Citizen

You do not have income does not exceed $75,000 ($150,000 if married filing jointly)

Benefit:

You do not have to pay back the $8,000 First Time Homebuyer Credit

How do you claim?

Fill out the IRS Form 5405 First-Time Homebuyer Credit and attach to your 2009 1040

Hi Naoma: One correction - edit your post - the $8,000 can also be claimed on your 2008 1040 (check out line 69).  That is an important fact.  If you buy in say August this year - you don't have to wait until next year to get your money.  As soon as you close - simply file a 2008 1040X which is an amended 2008 1040 tax return and you can get your money right away!

how is it you suggest a 1040 x for 2008 on a home sale completed in 09 you can't close escrow in 09 and retroactively claim it in 08.
