What You Don't Know - Might Not Always Hurt You.

Many blogs have written about topics such as: Is it the right time to buy? Ways to get buyers to buy now. Interest rates are low - buy now!

These blogs are filled with great information to help Buyers. But, there are still lots of people simply doing nothing or waiting until they "hear" things have improved;  for a better interest rate before they make a purchase; or until everyone else is doing it.

Yesterday came with a surprise: A new client - and a new thing:

He doesn't know or care what the news or other people's opinions are about real estate.

  • He just has an interest in buying a house.
  • He is purchasing based on what he needs and can afford; not what the interest rate is or how much home he can buy with a lower rate or whether or not it's a good deal on a foreclosure.
  • He knows a lot about what's important to HIM and he doesn't want to clutter his decisions based on a trend or what everyone else is saying or doing.

Shifting gears - I saw a new perspective - being unaware might put him ahead of the rest.

  • Maybe, what he doesn't know just might help him.
  • Maybe, the popular way isn't always the best way.
  • Perhaps doing something without knowing what everyone is saying - beats doing nothing at all.

Knowledge is important.  But sometimes what we know, or think we know, could stop us from doing something.  "We" as a society, tend to get caught up in trends, or norms and follow the masses instead of thinking for ourselves.

For this new client, not knowing the popular opinion is a good place for him to be.  He is forming his own opinion based on what he wants and his experiences. And it is giving him the freedom to think and do what's right for him.  Oddly, sometimes not knowing gives people the power to succeed.

Here Here...isn't that a breath of fresh air...someone who is reasonable. I have one guy, bless his little heart, I have been working with for a while...a long while..and he is looking "for a good deal" and I told him he is going to wait himself out of the market.

Gabrielle, there is an old saying, "If someone jumps off a bridge will you follow." Following the group isn't always productive or safe. It's nice to know there are some people who are independent thinkers and know what they want without the influences of majority. Great post and good luck with your client.

Gabrielle - I call those buyers my motivated buyers - I wish I had a couple now - all I have is people who think they know more than they do!  I wish all of them would quit listening to the talking heads in the news!  Good for you - these are the most fun buyers!  Oh and isn't that part of our job getting our buyers the good deals they didn't even know about - work with a good Mortgage Lender and the client gets the benefit!

Gabrielle,

There are good independent thinkers out there..isn't it wonderful??? We see many who are not afraid and have confidence in their decisions..they just have that nagging feeling from their negative co-workers who are not so self assured! Congratulations on a great post!

Hi Gabrielle, yes the herd mentality is alive and well in the US.  I'm not sure if not being informed is a good thing, though.  In this case, he has you to guide him, and you are informed and will keep him from making bad decisions.

Great point - not let the media be the driver of information but just the purpose at hand - buy a home!  They still will get the benefit of a great time to purchase and wonderful interest rates but the best is they get you to guide them to a wonderful decision!  Good luck!

Gabrielle- Some people really just know what's best for them, and won't be swayed by others' opinions. Best of luck with this new buyer!

Hi Gabrielle ~ Well he sounds like a breath of fresh air!  Ever since I got into real estate I've been amazed by how many people are only comfortable doing what everybody else is doing.  Meanwhile someone who follows his own heart and goes against the crowd will get such a better deal right now - and at the same time get the home he wants - which is the whole point anyways.
