Residents of Lake County in the Chicago Northwest Suburbs will be able to vote for the first time on April 7th on whether they think the proposed extension of Route 53 in the county is a good idea.
The County has placed an advisory referendum on the ballot which will state, "shall the State of Illinois construct the extension of Illinois Route 53 from Lake Cook Road northerly to Illinois Route 120"
The supporters in Lake County say the extension of 53 will provide a route for motorists in the Northwest Lake County and reduce heavily traffic areas. On the negative side, the critics believe that the proposed route 53 would destroy the environmental spaces and in some parts of Long Grove and Hawthorn Woods, the extension would run right through resident's backyards.
This had been a debate in the county and the Chicago Northwest Suburbs for 40 years, but this is the first time voters in Lake County will have a chance to tell the county what they think.
If the county wants to really know the feelings of the residents, my question is why the County would do a referendum on April 7th during an off-year election. Are they really going to get the voice of the people? What do you think?

It's a non-binding referendum... isn't it Judy? they don't realliy want to know what the people think.
they want the people to THINK that they want to know... but they're going to do what they want anyway, and this way, they can do it under the guise of "well, we asked what the people wanted"... and now we're building.
