Waste Not - Owners Save with Water-efficient Retrofits

In reading through the Multifamily Executive Magazine, March 1, 2009 edition, I spotted an article by Jennifer Popovec that caught my eye. It’s a great article highlighting everything from low-flow showerheads, water-efficient fixtures in the kitchens and bathrooms to touchless and trough faucets.

As any multi-family owner or manager knows, it is becoming more and more difficult to preserve rents and maintain net operating income. Still, they also need to be even more diligent about finding ways to reduce costs. Certainly the area of water is one way – an a big one at that – to reduce overhead costs, which, by the way, have increased an average of 27 percent. To cut down on the amount of water going into the city’s sewer system and the amount of water coming into their properties, apartment owners and managers can retrofit existing units with water-efficient toilets, faucets and showerheads. Water savings of 30 to 40 percent can be expected once these energy-saving devices are installed.

One very cool shower fixture feature is that it prevents hot water from running down the drain before you can get into the shower. It triggers a trickle as soon as the water heats up. How great is that! There are some great pictures of these products included in the article, too.
