I am not a pet guy. I did grow up on the farm so I spent alot of time taking care of animals.  We had cats and dogs but I decided they were not for me.  Its hard enough keeping up with things with two active kids ( 5 and 7 years old).

Yesterday afternoon as we were going in the house from playing outside I spot a little kitten that was wondering into the yard that looked lost.  Since we live on acreage we are far enough away from our neighbors to know if it was their kitten or not.

Of course my kids wanted to go pet the kitten. Petting turned in to feeding, feeding turned in to a connection and now the kitten is in the house and the kids are playing with it.

(This is what the kitten looks like.)

What do I do?  I just don't want it to go to the bathroom on my floor.  Otherwise its seems like it will be hard to kid rid of. Hopefully its a neighbors kitten and we can take it back home.

Cats are very easy to train in a littler box.  Also, get some cat nip and a scratching post... and this will save your furniture.  We adopted a cat a few years ago and she is now a "family" member.

Chuck - I have found that once the kitten is in the house you have officially been adopted.  Get a litter box, some good cat food (not cheap ash laden junk), some toys and catnip - your kids will never understand if you take the kitten away.  They are attached.

The good part is that cats are pretty low maintenance.

Listen to Joan!!! and your kids :-)  Kittens, since so young, are very easily trainable, and will provide your kids with a great learning/loving experience.  If you see my posts, you know I am a HUGE animal lover.  At the very least, although I hope you keep him/her, take it to the vet to get spayed or neutered to control the pet population.  Keep us updated!!

Ohh come on Dad, let them keep it. A pet will do wonders for a family. I am sure you will learn to love it and pretty quickly I might add. Give it a shot. A cat isn't a lot of matinence.

I foster stray, abandoned & abused cats & kittens.  This one adopted YOU!  How fortunate for your family!  Training is simple:  confine the kitten in a smaller, room such as a bathroom, with a litter box, food and toys.  It only takes a few days for a kitten to figure out where to go potty because it's natural for them to dig and bury.  Be careful with potted plants!  Some kittens will take to that soil if their litter box isn't kept clean.

We have a house full and the best one of the bunch is a stray male who was badly injured.  His side was torn up and we had to have his left eye removed.  And he's the only cat in the house that has not been front paw declawed.  He does not jump up on furniture and he does not use furniture for a scratching post.  He found all the "right" things for inside use!  He's the only one who needs to be held like a baby and cuddled and he actually come running and crying to be held for a minute when I walk in the house.

Take care of that little one......and you might even think about getting it a playmate!  2 are even better than 1.

No easier pet to have than a cat!! I've had them all of my life. One piece of advice, keep the feeding time regular. They will push you to feed them earlier and earlier and pretty soon you'll be up at 5 am instead of 6 am.

Chuck, I have kids ages 9 and 5 and we just got them a puppy. They absolutely love her, one of the best things we have ever done. Just like kids, pets are work but worth the reward. Plus, based on the fact that you feed it and and invited it into your home, sounds like you have a new pet. Enjoy!

Congratulation Chuck - As Janet said - You have been ADOPTED! I am sure you will grow to love the kitten. I live in the country and have barn kitties - On several occasions, a young mom gets tired of caring for babies and decides to drop them on me. They know I will take care of them. Here is a successful tip for you; the proud new cat man!!!!!

They feel safe in small quarters - After play time, put the kitten in a small area (bathroom, etc. w/litter box, bedding, food and water. They are very clean and will quickly adapt to their new home. Take them out to play and socialize. At night and when you are gone, put them to bed in their little room/area. Works wonders! And they adapt quickly.
