  "A Step Back in Time"

"A Step Back in Time" is what one experiences if they visit this year's Designer House. This is the name that has been given to this year's event.  Each year the largest fundraiser for the Charleston Symphony Orchestra is the Designer Showhouse.  This year's choice is an old historic home in downtown Charleston, SC at the corner of East Bay Street and George Street.

The home, formerly the Maison Du Pre Inn, is located at 317 East Bay Street and is actually for sale for $4,890,000. Two real estate companies in Charleston have co-listed the property---Carriage Properties and Tyler Bergin of AgentOwned Realty.

The historic home place consists of 5 houses over 3 parcels of land. Each of the 5 houses (3 Charleston single houses and 2 carriage houses were restored between 1985 and 1986 and then again this year 2009 for the Charleston Symphony Designer Showhouse.

As is the style of Charleston, SC, the homes are Grande Maison Du Pre (c. 1805), Petite Maison Du Pre (c.1803), Maison Stoney (c.1803), Maison Whiting (c. 1835) and Maison MacKey (c.1835).

                                        317 East Bay
The complex of houses consists of 15 guest rooms with original pine floors and 24 fireplaces --- all centered around a breathtaking court yard lined with lush landscaping.

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra event chairman, Carol Lou Yeager, says "One of the hallmarks of our designer house this year is the mystery of what lies behind the walls of Maison Du Pre. For some years, I have driven past and always wondered and was intrigued by what was behind those walls."

I am like Mrs. Yeager --- I, too, have driven by many times and wondered what was behind those brick walls.

The Symphony Orchestra engaged 17 designers to design and decorate 24 spaces of the houses for this event.

The photos above are some of shots of the inside job the designers have done.  The bed headboard is made of shells and took 5 days to make.

This local event is a must go for anyone who enjoys historical homes.  Tickets are $20 and be purchased on line at the Designer Showhouse web site. This includes a tour of the homes and entertainment by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra.  It is a great cause.  The Symphony, like so many others, is having a difficult time financially. I'm writing this blog hoping to inspire others to take a look.

Thanks to Charleston Home magazine for the 26 page spread on this years' Symphony Designer Showhouse

The event runs from March 19 - April 19, 2009.  Will be open every day except Easter Sunday. Monday - Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00 pm and Sunday from 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

Boyd & I are planning to attend. Charleston is having such beautiful weather.  Most any day is a great day to go downtown Charleston --- enjoy this event, even have lunch there if you like.

We are going, are you?

I love looking at historical homes.  It is time to bring Miss Maddie down and introduce her to downtown Charleston.

What a neat old home. I once had a heritage place in Edmonton. At the the time it was 75; now 100.

Wish I still had it.

Hey Liz!

That homes looks terrific, it reminds of a palace! We don't get very many historic homes here in Utah considering we are such a new state... :(

Liz - I just love how they decorated in that era!  Sometimes I think that I would've liked to live back then...sometimes... :)

Debi --- I kinda sorta did live like that a little bit --- not the swanky things, but claw foot  bathtub, no hear, no AC -- the fireplace was our heat.  I can tell you that I so much like today's living, bad economy and all.

Thanks for stopping by and your comments.  You are terrific and I appreciate your friendship.
