Today I left for an Open House hungry. Really hungry. Big mistake!
I had half an hour to grab food, wolf it down, shove signs in the ground and show up smiling at the front door. So it was fast food for me.
Normally, I'm pretty careful about what I eat. And it's mostly health, organic, lowish fat and mostly veggies. Well, being really hungry can help you make very bad food decisions. And I made one today.
I went through the drive-through at a big fast food chain. I ordered a chicken sandwich, rings and a chocolate shake. And I inhaled it! It tasted fabulous. And then about half an hour into the Open, I crashed!
I had no energy. None! Forget the fun and schmoozing with all of the people who came through. I just wanted a nap! Head on a pillow snooze!
Even though a lot of people came through, it felt like a wasted afternoon. While there were some folks who like the place, I didn't connect with a single person! That's not like me!
So I've learned my lesson! Next time I do an Open, I am going to eat a big salad with maybe a little salmon and a light vinegrette dressing.
They say you are what you eat. Geeze, I hope not!
34 Comments on Junk Food Is A Bad Idea When Working!
Junk food vs organic food is like coffee vs green tea to me. I never draw any pure energy from junk food or coffee. When I was young like the 20s, I thought junk food was the best food in the world.
I don't need to lose weight, just to satisfy my appetite. A few months ago I ordered Nutrisystems exactly for those days that I am famished. It's perfect for a meal on the fly.
Hi Pat,
LOL! I am always tempted to make bad food choices when I am really hungry. ( and often times do)The drive through is too easy sometimes when you are in a hurry.

Oh, yes. Brian usually calls me before every open house and says he is hungry and will have to stop for junk food. Didn't remember to grab anything from home! Of course it doesn't help that we often bake cookies for our open houses, another 'great' snack food.
If we are what we eat, I am in big trouble! My husband is on a health food regime, and I am ultra supportive, so I have to sneak my junk food binges in.
Hi Pat... I am guilty of the same transgression. Ironically, it's usually when we most need the energy boost that we turn to food that acts more as an energy vacuum!
Oh, C'mon. nothing wrong with being a junk food junkie now is there? So it is not good for you, full of fat grams and carbs but what the heck...
I do the same sort of thing, except I don't eat all day, and then by mid-afternoon, I'm shaking and have a headache. Poor, poor planning. I ate a cinnamon bun at 9:00 am yesterday and by 3:30, I had a huge headache, was shaky because my blood sugar was in the toilet, etc. I had to run right out with my family afterwards. I made my husband take us all out to eat first. I could never make it through a shopping trip with the three kids.
It's so silly and disrespectful to ourselves. There's no reason to be too busy to EAT for crying out loud!
Pat --- such is life ---- Lately, I really have been working on eating correctly. It is difficult for me because I really like all the wrong kinds of food---you know, french fries, pizza, chocolate, etc. But today for lunch, I will have tuna & lettuce with a little mustard.
Pat,
The older I get the less the hamburger stands appeal to me.
I have had the same "fast food" results as you experienced. i like to carry a small bag of raw carrots with me to Opens. Don't know why but they seems to get me through quite nicely.
Fast food will always deliver the unwanted. But occaisionally I allow myself the drive through view.
Guilty! Although I was the opposite of you yesterday. I didn't have time to eat. I was starving while showing apartments all afternoon. On the way home I dropped off another agent and was continuing home until I saw a hot dog stand so I stopped and had 2 hot dogs.
Pat - This is so funny, because it's so typical of me. I try to avoid the junk food but it's hard when you need a fast fix. Well, at least you didn't describe the gastric effects of all that fried food combined with the shake. Now, THAT would have made for a really unpleasant time.
Hi I agree we usually have a big breakfast before the open house and maybe a snack just before. You need to be hungry at the opn house.
I'm kinda the opposite... I would be starving after about an hour with eating "rabbit" food, but I would feel great for much longer with the fast food... but I'm mostly a pasta person, so I eat a lot of that which makes my body used to all the carbs that most people get tired from.
Pat - I didn't eat anything before or during my open house yesterday and boy was I feeling grumpy and stupid. I passed one of your sings on Porter on the way home and was so out of it I thought for a moment (a very brief moment) of stealing your sign as a joke. (Actually, blame my wife. It was her idea.) However, cooler minds prevailed and your sign remained.
Had a bunch of cheese and crackers when I got home and felt better.
Well you didn't LOOK tired! :-) Open Houses always screw up my eating habits on Sunday.
Pat,
funny how all these little things in our lives can dictate our feelings and/or attitude, huh?
Pat,
I immediately thought of you:
