When I returned home and plopped them in a vase I began to wonder just what kind of lilies they were and set about learning a bit about them. These particular lilies are known as Starfighters. I immediately thought of Star Trek, one of my favorite TV shows from the 1960s. After observing them bloom over the past few days, I decided they were named appropriately because of the way the stamen and pistol radiated outward in a huge spray of color and energy... just as the Starship Enterprise does whenever traveling at warp speed across the galaxies.
Starfighter lilies are abundantly large, very fragrant with deep pink petals and a well defined white border with generous burgandy freckling. A few weeks ago, instead of saying "freckling" I would have said specks or spots, but a green-thumb friend of mine recently used the term to describe the spots as freckles. I think the lesson stuck!
As part of my Celebration of SpringI've created a second video installment... of Starfighters from the budding stage to being in full bloom. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

Hi Linda, The starfighters are awesome! I am also a lilly fanatic! I started w/ the stargaver (very similar). I kept collecting plants in all kinds of shades & colors. In fact my blog basckground is an intense orange w/ burgundy freckles! If I see a fabulous plant while travelling, I just have to buy it & add it to my garden collection! Enjoy :~)
Hi Again, Your starfighters are more intense in color than the stargazer variety. Yours would be called 'red' while the stargazer is more intensely pink. BTW, it's cool that you're a flower fan & you live in Flower mound. Too funny!
Wonderful! I love all kinds of colors and plants. I worked in my little garden today...transplanted bromeliads so they flower big time this spring/summer.... I want colors!
I worked as a florist for several years, and had never heard of starFIGHTERS, only gazers...nice to know! I'm sure if you love lilies, that you know to pluck those stamens before they fall on a tablecloth or touch fabric! stained for life! =o(
Linda, that was so very beautiful! I am itching for flowers to come up, I can hardly wait for flowers outside. Maybe I should get some flowers for inside! Thank you.
Hi Gary—You are the first person to comment AND the only man as well... looks as though you are in terrific company - LOL! Lilies are appropriate for this time of year... I hadn't thought of that when I bought the Starfighters. Great seeing you again - thanks!
Hi Judy—Yes, there are two different varieties... I double checked to be certaian - LOL! I didn't know about the Stargazers, but I'm sure I bought some unknowingly last year for my niece. They were very simiilar, but the pinks were paler and not as intense as the Starfighters. Thanks for stopping by and have a great week!
Hi Marian—It is difficult to resist buying flowers... especially lilies this time of year. Collecting plants during your travels is an excellent way to remember your journey. It is cool to be a flower lover and live in a lace called Flower Mound. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your love of lilies. Have a great week!
Hi Sally—I've been diging in the dirt this weekend... transplanting flowers too hoping to give them a head start... or at least not killing them - LOL! Color is what it's all about, of course, but the fragrances from these lilies is heavenly too. Take care and have a great week - thanks!
Hi Cheryl—Thanks for the tip about the stamens... I sort of knew that, but it didn't kick in until it was too late. Oh well, live and learn. I'm much more careful now. It's good to see you. Thanks and have a great week!
Hey there lil' Sistah—So glad you enjoyed the show. It's good to have you as my personal cheerleader - LOL! Hope you have a great week and see you soon!
Hi Andrea—Until things warm up more in your area, buying a bouquet of flowers is a good way to lift your spirits. I dug in the dirt a bit this weekend... I love to plant seeds and plants and watch them grow. It's very satisfying to have fresh herbs in my container garden when I need them in the kitchen. Take care and have a great week!
Hi Robert—I hope everything continues to go very well for you. I think you have an inherent gift and talent for appreciating beauty whether it's in clouds, flowers, landscapes, and especially with your family and friends. Thanks for visiting... have a great week.
Hi Sis-I'm always gonna be your cheerleader, What are sistah's for. You are so much nicer than some of my brothers. Always wanted a sister but God gave me 5 brothers instead. Now I got a sister. VERY COOL!!!!!!!
Hey lil' Sistah—What are you doing up so late... it's way past you bed time... like you'd listen to me anyway - LOL! They say God never gives us more than we can handle, but I don't know what I'd do with five bros. Guess it's good he gave them to you instead of me. Take care and have a terrific week.
Hi Sistah Linda-You are SO much nicer than brothers. They harass me BIG TIME. I can see you are being a good big sis and wondering what I'm doing up so late. I would listen to you as long as it was what I wanted to hear LOL I have been up much later than that and my good buddy Gary W chews me out for that. I'm surrounded, what is a wild monkey to do. I'd send you my youngest brother but I wouldn't wish him on my worst enemy. REALLY! So see now I got a sister and life doesn't get any better than that. Enjoy your day. Later sis work beckons and I suppose if I want to get paid I gotta do something. LOL
Hey Sistah Sharon—I am generally nice, but you really don't want to get on my bad side... some people have never been seen again after ticking me off - LOL! Not really, but it sounds soooooooo good to say it. You can't get away with anything around here, so I'd be a very good girl if I were you. I think I'd like Gary. Yeah, it's weird, but folks don't want to pay us for playing in the RAIN, so get back to work or no ice cream for you. Must go - take care.
Hi Gail—I did this one with iMovies instead of Picasa... please don't alert the Fun Police becasue I believe you can never have too much fun, even when working! IF only we could teleport the way Trekkers do, but for now it's still a bit iffy as they haven't quite figured out how to get our atoms to realign correctly yet, but some day I think it will be possible. Thanks... <smiling> back.
UH OH I been warned and so early in the sistah relationship. I think I'm in trouble and I can't have ice cream even if I'm a good girl cause I'm trying to eat healthier and I have a tough fitness coach that I have to fess up to even if I been bad. Life is rough LOL i sure wish they would pay you for playing in the rain. That would be the ultimate job. Later gater, gotta go see what you posted new.
iMovies- good to know---you learn So much here on ar.... I've been looking for a little inspiration (hence finding this great group)--I really enjoyed it (and your Iris photo too!)
Hi Lori—The first one I did was with Picasa and this one is with iMovies. If you read up the line there are at least one, if not two additional suggestions to check-out. Good luck learning here in the RAIN... it is fun and a good way to hone new skills. Thanks for stopping by... you're welcome back any time. Have a great week!
Linda - After looking over and reading your post again I have decided to feature it. And it was a pleasure talking with you over the telephone several weeks ago. By the way "Great Post" and so HAPPY!
Hi Robert, err Vegas Bob—or is it Burma Bob...? We'll have to wait to see what your decision is before we change your current moniker.
I tried to sleep, but the sandman forgot where I live tonight... so, here I am commenting at 2:00 a.m. When I logged-on I discovered your message saying you had FEATURED my lily post. I'm now doing my HAPPY dance in the Rain!!! Thanks so much... this jump starts my Thursday in the best way possible. I'm glad you decided to return and make my day a very HAPPY one!
Hi Vegas Bob—Wow! Thanks for taking care of that so quickly. You are one busy man, so I thought it might take awhile for you to get to it. It's amazing how much happier I have been lately, so this was icing on the cake!
Hey Vegas Bob—Thanks again... I'm HAPPY at Activerain! I love your HAPPY, smiley face. Let me know whenever I can return the favor. Have a great weekend!
Hey there Sheldon—A man that loves lilies... be still my heart - LOL! The Starfighters are a different variety than the Stargazers, the coloring is more intense. Thanks for your glowing comments. Oh dear, me thinks I see another nickname in the making. Gail is now calling me LuLu... many of my non-AR friends have been calling me that for years, but now it's on AR too... Lily Linda has a ring to it... I wonder if we can evolve it into LuLu Lily? Hmmmm...
Cheers to you too my friend! Have a great weekend!
Hellllllloooooo Sheldon—By jove, I think we've got it! It has a certain je ne sais quoi......don't you think? May be we should run a forcus group or at least a poll to determine if this is "it"...Thanks, I like it too!

Lillies are so beautiful Linda and as Easter approaches we see more and more of them. Great presentation and I love the music too.
