MSNBC is reporting this morning, that AIG spent time this weekend, taking down their sign, at its most prominent downtown Manhattan offices, and will be replacing the sign outside the property-casualty offices, to AIU Holdings Ltd.

A spokesperson stated the move is to distinguish AIU Holdings Ltd, as their "well-capitalized business" from AIG.

Question: Will a change of name truly change the nature of AIG's business, or is it simply a way to hide the wolf in sheep's clothing?

I think it unlikely that changing the initials will have much to do with changing their business practices.

I think they are simply trying to protect their employees from the crazies!

I agree with Steven's comment above totally.  How stupid do they think we are!

What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;  William Shakespeare.

Some things never change I guess!

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck; even if the duck changes its' name to swan. Of course, on the internet, will the search engines know that?

Myrl, I'm sure that the "U" will absolutely be the change the company needs.  I think that U is a much more respectable letter, don't U?

Hmmm.  I see a "quacker" here.  (duck reference)  I think the only way to distinguish itself from AIG is to stop acting like AIG.  Don't you think?

Steven - It probably makes about as much difference as moving the deck furniture on the Titanic.

Karen - I actually think the "crazies" were running AIG.

Patricia - Isn't the Brooklyn Bridge that some folks tried to sell - in Manhattan:-)

John - Shakespeare in all his glory, couldn't have conjured an AIG/AIU.

Maria - Quack, quack, quack!

Kate - The "U" should stand for "Unforgiven."

Heather - I'm still not hearing too much from Capitol Hill about regulation and restrictions on the banking and financial industry, which would prevent future business practices being anything different than what we've seen with the dot.com/Enron/junk bond/subprime debaucles of past years.  Until we do - I foresee business as usual.

Elizabeth - I think you and Paula need to share the same email address, and make my life easier:-)

LOL @ Elizabeth. ;-)

Hmm... There's irony in those initials. Government employees refer to AIU as Applicant Investigation Unit and Audit Investigation Unit... :-)

C - Apparently, we are a whole lot stupider than we look!  Apparently, the financial media has changed the term, "Toxic Assets" to "Legacy Assets."  The reason - they are apparently looking to "clean" up the label so they can now find willing investors, to buy them up with the government.  You gotta just love the marketing strategies being launched:-)

Maybe they should move out of that expensive downtown Manhattan location. I am sure that would save a few bucks.

My Grandma would roll over in her grave if she could see the news just one day. She died in 1995 at the age of 94, and even then the news topics would trouble her, and that was with just the 3 non cable channels: NBC, ABC & CBS! It's all just madness. Ridiculous! I've closed one sale in the last 6 months with a lender; ALL other sales have been cash and land contract!

Marilyn - I have those same thoughts about my own parents.  They have both died, and the world has been upside down since their deaths.  My dad passed in 1966, and my mother in 1975.  They wouldn't recognize the world we live in today.
