ADDING MUSIC TO YOUR WEBSITE

By
Real Estate Agent with Remax Services

This topic should ensue a good discussion!!!!

What does everyone think of having music added to their website or Blog?

I personally love the idea. I think it definitely adds a creative touch and sets a mood.

My reservations are the following:

1. For people who don't like the music choices or it bothers them, are they computer savvy enough to turn down their volume or stop the music?

2. Is it distracting, and taking away from my website and the valuable information!!

3 Will it slow my site down.....good question for anyone who's tech savvy.

I haven't seen it on any real estate sites yet, so am I setting a new trend, or making a big mistake?

Please leave me comments with your opinion!!!!!

Stephanie, I generally find music distracting and turn it off, although I have seen a few sites that have pulled it off successfully. It's often a generational thing, and that, I think, makes it difficult to choose music that will appeal to a wide audience. It will be interesting to see what other reactions are.

Sorry Stephanie...I don't like the idea. Too many folks surf for new homes at work and they are NOT happy when the music starts and everybody knows they aren't working. Same for folks (like me) who surf and watch tvor surf and talk on the phone. I don't want to mess around franticly looking for the off switch. I'm surfin' for info I want and that's all the mood I need!

When I go to a site and music starts playing I immediately turn the volume off or leave.  I find it very difficult to read details on a page, especially if the music has lyrics.  I also agree with all the items you listed for reasons not to play music.

I hate sites with music. Its just annoying. its one thing if you have a player available but if it just starts count me out. I click back immediately.

Music on sites is a bad idea. It slows it down, and if the music isn't appealing to people it just makes them angry.

Wow, I think this decision is unanimous......maybe I won't put it on my site, but experiment with it on my blog.

Thanks for your comments

I keep my speakers turned off just because of all of the sites that I hit with annoying music or people who just start talking.  In my opinion it isn't any better if you add it to your blog.

We wouldn't want music on our website, but we do use it on our virtual tours. It adds a nice touch and we've never had any complaints. Based on the responses above, the real estate agents don't like it, but I wonder what consumers think, because after all , that is who we are marketing to. Thanks for the post Stephanie.

Dan & Amy thanks for the comment.....i have a feeling consumers would probably feel the same as the agents, but it would be great to hear from one of them.

Stephanie ~ It is a great idea! But, I don't like it either. Have you come across a post with music yet? Just wait, when it happens you will understand why your comments say they don't like it!!

Great question by the way, just remember it is entirely up to you what you decide! It is your blog and it has got to be you! Have a great day.

Stephanie - good question. I agree that it would add a nice creative touch and set you apart from the competition and make your website unique but I also think that it would be very hard to find music that appeals to the majority of people who would travel to your website and that it would be distracting. So personally although I can see how it would be tempting I don't think it would be a great idea. Let us know what you decide and how you think it works out for you if you do put music on your blogs or website.

I visited a site on another venue where the guy had "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" playing in the background.

Another was playing Muzak from "one who flew over the Cukoo's nest"

Not everyone likes everyone's music. I particulary don't like some of my kid's Hip Hop music. Not that it's bad, I just don't like it. I think silence is golden.

Hi Stephanie,

One more vote against it from this corner.  I'm surprised to have never read another post that talked about the music that bursts out on Active Rain every so often.  And it always drives me nuts because it's usually hard to figure out which post it's coming from. As others have mentioned the most important reason not to do it is because so many people are online while at work. I think that something like blip or blip.fm - whatever it's called might be a good option as a widget. Then people can decide to play the tune.

Nooooo!!!!!  I built my first website with music.  The web designer who rebuilt it several months later said, "Music on your site is considered over the top," so we took it off.  Since then, I realize that I find music on other websites totally annoying -- especially if it's loud.  I don't even like soft music playing while I'm viewing a slide show.  Seems like most others feel the same way.  Good discussion!

Great topic for discussion. I was advised a long time ago NOT to have music on my site because you don't know who you'll possibly offend and not get their deal. Myself, I love music, but even with personal experiences when I've clicked on a site and heard something that was supposed to be music playing, I turn it off.

I don't like music on websites either.  My picture slide show does have music.  I can pick a song that fits the home.  I do like that.
